When starting to eat, (someone advised him) Great King, be mindful! Like this, teaching the Dharma, he immediately stopped eating and died, and was reborn among the gods of Tushita, so it is said. That king built temples and many foundations of Dharma in all the places he ruled, so that the Buddha's teachings spread everywhere. When he gained faith in the Buddha's teachings, his former name changed, and he became known as Dharma Ashoka, meaning Ashoka of Dharma. When it was impossible to offer ninety-six billion gold pieces to the monks under the sun, at that time a wise minister said, "There is a way for this king, which is to dedicate the entire kingdom to the Sangha. One hundred billion gold pieces are contained within it." Knowing this to be true, he offered the kingdom to the Sangha. For the sake of increasing the king's merit, the Sangha managed the kingdom for two days. There, immeasurable gold and wealth were offered to the Sangha, and after taking back the kingdom, Ashoka's nephew Vigataśoka was appointed as king. In the collection of stories made by Sa-dbang bzang-pos, only the arrangement of the order of this history appears. Related to the Śrāvakapiṭaka are the story of Ashoka, the story of subduing Ashoka, the story of Ashoka subduing the Nāgas, the story of the Stūpa, the story of the festival, the story of offering gold, these six, and the story of Kunla, these seven, of which the second and seventh have been translated into Tibetan, and I have also seen the Sanskrit versions of the others. Various stories such as the offering of gold are also found in the Wish-Fulfilling Tree. The chapter on the story of King Ashoka, the sixth, ends. Chapter Seven, the stories that occurred at the same time as King Ashoka. Before the venerable Dhītika had transmitted the Dharma to the venerable Kṛṣṇa, the venerable Dhītika resided for many years in a place called Kauśāmbī in the region of Malava, teaching the fourfold assembly. The monks of Vaishali, due to persistent illness,

What true following teaching can be obtained from perversion? They do not go in that direction, and while practicing the ten unwholesome deeds, they proclaim, "This is the Dharma, this is the Vinaya, this is the teaching of the Teacher." Then, seven hundred Arhats, led by the Arhat Named, refuted them, and in the monastery called Kusumapura, with the king named Delightful (Gāyaka), who came from the Licchavi clan, as the patron, the Second Council was held. Those seven hundred Arhats were those who, when six cities had set the boundaries, resided only on the side of Vaishali (Vaiśālī), and were liberated from both sides, and were greatly learned. Therefore, this Second Council was a partial council. The actual history of this is no more than what is stated in the Cullavagga, and it is well known, so it is not written here. Bhāṭaghaṭī and Vasumitra said that the council occurred at that time. In the Vinaya that exists in Tibet now, it is consistent with the statement that the Second Council was held one hundred and ten years after the Teacher's passing into Nirvana. Therefore, only one's own tradition should be adopted. In the Vinaya of some other schools, there is also the statement that the Second Council was held two hundred and ten or two hundred and twenty years after the Teacher's passing into Nirvana. Considering that it is in accordance with this, in some historical documents that came from India, the venerable Dhītika and others were made contemporary with King Ashoka (Aśoka), and it is said that the Great Vision (Mahādarśana) also passed into Nirvana, and the Second Council was held after King Ashoka also passed away. That is because in the Cullavagga, he entrusted the teachings to the Great Vision, and the great elephant completely passed into Nirvana. At that time, the words "one hundred and ten years after the Teacher's passing into Nirvana" and so on, became the basis of confusion. In Chinese, the word yatajita, due to the nature of the word, can refer to both "when" and "at that time," but here it should be translated as "when." And saying two hundred and twenty years, etc., is because it is calculated as half a year, so it has the same meaning as saying one hundred and ten years, said the Lama Paṇḍita.
