That was a person who had heard little and was very foolish, unable to recite even a single verse. Among those young monks, there were also many who were holders of the scriptures. After the meal was finished, those sitting in the lower seats asked the old monk, 'Do you know the reason why the king especially respects you?' The old monk replied, 'I do not know.' They said, 'We know, now the king wants to come to listen to the Dharma, so you must teach the Dharma.' At that moment, the old monk felt as if he had been struck in a vital spot. 'I have been fully ordained for sixty years, and I don't even know a single verse. If I had known this earlier, I would have given those delicious foods to other monks and then gone to find a Dharma speaker.' Now that I have eaten them, what should I do? He became very distressed. At that moment, the deity dwelling in the grove thought, 'If the king loses faith in this monk, that would be bad.' So, he transformed into a form and came before the monk, saying, 'If the king comes to listen to the Dharma, you should say: Great King, even this earth with its mountains will be destroyed, let alone the king's kingdom. Even this great king himself should consider this.' After that, the king came, wearing a golden robe, and sat down to listen to the Dharma. The old monk spoke as before, and because the king was a faithful person, he thought it was very true, felt his hair stand on end, and pondered on this matter. Then, the deity of the grove said again, 'Old monk, do not waste the offerings given by the faithful.' He also asked his teacher for instructions and practiced single-mindedly. After three months, he attained the state of an Arhat and spent the summer retreat in the Ever-Abiding Grove, the gathering place of the thirty-three (त्रयस्त्रिंश, trayastriṃśa, thirty-three) gods. Afterwards, he returned to Pataliputra, appearing in the midst of the Sangha and a large gathering of people. The robe given by the king was imbued with the fragrance of the Ever-Abiding Tree, filling that entire area with fragrance. The other monks asked the reason, and he also told the previous story, and everyone was amazed. Gradually, this matter was also heard by the king, the monk

Even someone with a very dull mind attained the state of an Arhat, due to the merits of the Dharma, and also because he had offered his own clothes. Seeing the benefits of altruistic giving, he again held a grand festival for three million monks for five years. In the first part of the morning, he offered food and excellent clothes to the Arhats, in the second part to the noble learners, and in the third part to the ordinary Sangha. Then, as that king's life was coming to an end, he vowed to offer one hundred million gold coins each to the Sangha in the region under the sun, Kashmir, and Tokharistan. He completely offered the gold and other items of equal value to the Sangha of Kashmir and Tokharistan. While he had not yet offered four million gold coins and items to the Sangha under the sun, the king himself was afflicted with a severe illness. The king's nephew, named Norlhas Jin, who was the manager of the gold treasury, broke the king's word and did not offer the remaining gold to the Sangha. At that time, many Arhats came to the king's presence, and the king himself, with extremely devout mind, offered half a handful of Emblica fruit to quench their thirst to the Sangha. Those Arhats unanimously praised, "King, when you were previously completely free, you offered ninety-six billion gold coins, but this offering now is even more meritorious." After that, a maidservant was fanning with a jeweled-handled fan, and because of the heat of the day, she dozed off and the fan fell from her hand, striking the king's body. The king thought, "In the past, even great kings would do things like washing feet, but now even such a lowly servant despises me," and with an angry mind, he passed away. Due to that anger, he was reborn as a Naga in the great lake in Pataliputra. The Arhat Grakpa investigated where the Dharma-abiding king had been reborn and learned that he had been reborn as a Naga in that lake. When the Arhat came to the shore of the lake, due to the habits of his previous life, he came out of the lake with great joy and sat before the Arhat. Birds and animals
