Having done that, they went there and dug. After digging down about three men's height, there was an iron 16-448 wheel with flames blazing and spinning violently, making it impossible to find a place to take it. At that time, an old woman from the village showed a method, saying that about three yojanas (approximately 9 kilometers) west of that place, at the foot of a mountain, there was a flowing river. By changing its course, the spinning of the wheel would stop and the fire would be extinguished. When they dug again, they found a copper plate with the inscription: 'Here lies the relic of the Tathagata, one large 'bre bo' (unit of volume) of Magadha. In the future, a poor king will take it out.' Seeing these words, Ashoka, out of pride, thought: 'The one who takes it out is not me, for I am poor, so it must be someone else.' He turned away and sat down, but was again urged by the Arhat Grags pa. Finally, after digging down about seven men's height, from the center of the iron box and other boxes, about seven layers inside and out, it appeared that the Buddha's relic, originally one large 'bre bo' of Magadha, had grown to about six 'khal' (unit of weight). At the four corners of the box, there was a precious jewel, each radiating light that shone for a yojana (unit of distance), placed there as offerings. Seeing this, even if each jewel were to be valued, it could not be measured by all the wealth of King Ashoka's kingdom, and knowing this, the king's pride was shattered. Then, he took out one 'bre bo' of precious relics, and again placed and hid them as before, and also set up the iron wheel. He also allowed the secret water to flow as before, so that the flames burned and spun as before. Later, he covered it up again. After that, he also issued commands to people in different places, and all the messengers and work companions were done by powerful yakshas. Stupas were built at the eight great pilgrimage sites and around the Vajrasana (Bodh Gaya), and also in all the lands of Jambudvipa (the continent), including Li yul (Khotan, present-day Xinjiang) to the north, with the essence of Shakyamuni Buddha's relics. 16-449 As a result, eighty-four thousand stupas were completed in one day and one night. After that, he issued commands to all of Li yul (Khotan), ordering that butter lamps be lit at all the stupas, incense be burned, and thousands upon thousands of flower garlands be offered.

, offering daily and to the Bodhi tree with gold, silver, and vaidurya vases, filling tens of thousands of vases with fragrant water and the five ambrosias. From afar, they offered with tens of thousands of incense and lamps. There, for three months, they invited sixty thousand Arhats, requesting them to sit in the sky above Pataliputra every day, and offered with all necessities. The noble learners and the ordinary Sangha were offered to on the ground. At the end, each monk was given clothes worth a hundred thousand rupees. That night, to see the stupas, the king, along with his retinue, was carried on the shoulders by powerful yakshas. Within seven days, they circumambulated all the stupas of the Three Jewels in all places of Jambudvipa, offering ten times more than usual. And to all the stupas of the Buddhas and Shravakas, they offered a gold ornament each. The Bodhi tree was especially adorned with all kinds of jewels. On the eighth day, in the daytime, with this root of virtue of mine, may I become the supreme Buddha among men, repeatedly praying. And saying, may all beings rejoice and follow with joy. Many people said: The king's actions are many, but the result is small. If there is no unsurpassed Bodhi, how can the king's wishes be fulfilled? If my wish is fulfilled, may this great earth also shake, and may a rain of flowers fall from the sky. As soon as he said this, the earth shook, and a rain of flowers fell, and those people also developed faith and began to pray. When the monks had completed three months of offerings for the sake of repairing the stupa, many ordinary monks suddenly arrived, and the king made a great offering in the garden. And he especially offered to an old monk who was sitting at the front of their row.
