Arranged on the lotus (པ་ལ་, Sanskrit: Padma, Romanized Sanskrit: padma, meaning: lotus) as follows: Then, not long after, on the night of the fourteenth or fifteenth of the waxing half of the middle summer month, when all the dates, weekdays, and constellations were auspicious, on a moonlit night, King Ajatashatru, surrounded by a retinue of ministers, went to the high palace and asked his attendants, "What should I do at such an auspicious time?" A woman from Shravasti (སླས་, Śrāvastī) said, "At such a time, indulge in the five objects of desire, as that is the activity of the gods." Another said, "Wander through the streets of the city and inspect them." A young man named Good Growth (འཆར་བྱེད་བཟང་པོ་) said, "Put on armor and destroy the enemy." One minister said, "Pay homage to Light-Protected Completion (འོད་སྲུངས་རྫོག་བྱེད་)." Likewise, each minister said, "Pay homage to one of the six teachers." The ignorant worldly king or ministers and others with sinful natures mostly do not believe in the correct teachings but only believe in the wrong teachings, which is the power of things themselves. No one is willing to take joy in correct virtue. At that time, the young physician Jivaka Komarabhacca (འཚོ་བྱེད་གཞོན་ནུ་གསོས་འཁོར་) was also there, but he did not say anything. The king asked, "Why are you not speaking?" He replied, "I do not think those are the activities of the gods. In my mango grove, the Blessed One (བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས་, Sanskrit: Bhagavan, Romanized Sanskrit: bhagavan, meaning: the fortunate one) is residing. If the gods were to pay homage to him, that would be the activity of the gods tonight." The king was very pleased and immediately ordered, "Prepare the elephants! Set out!" So, five hundred female elephants were prepared. Jivaka drove the elephant, and the king sat behind him. Five hundred people from the palace of Shravasti (སླས་) holding torches also stood behind each elephant, following behind. As they were coming out of the palace, the king became suspicious on the way, thinking, "Could this Jivaka be leading me astray?" So he asked, "How many attendants does the teacher have?" "One thousand two hundred and fifty." "Jivaka, why do you not want to harm me? With so many attendants, not even the sound of excrement is heard." He replied, "The teacher delights in quiet, so the attendants are also quiet. Do not be suspicious." And then said, "Now, set out the elephant."

One, the courtyard of the Sangha and the light of ghee lamps are here. Then, after setting up the elephant, King Ajatashatru entered the Jetavana Monastery on foot. Jivaka showed the king that the Teacher (Shakyamuni Buddha) was dwelling in the midst of the Sangha, as clear and unblemished as a lake. The king also prostrated and said: Bhagavan, along with the Sangha of monks, just as you are subdued and peaceful, may my son, Good Star (Ajatashatru), also become peaceful and subdued. The Teacher also agreed, saying, "Good." After the king sat down on the seat, he asked about various doubts, and the Teacher also extensively spoke about the Dharma, causing the king to develop unsurpassed faith. Recalling his past misdeeds, he shed tears and wept for a long time, saying: I was deceived by evil friends and killed my father, who possessed the Dharma. I am truly foolish! Please regard my fault as a fault. The Teacher instructed: That is true, but if you recognize your fault and confess, and from now on restrain yourself, then the virtuous Dharma will not decline, but will increase. In this way, the Teacher established Ajatashatru in unwavering faith and invited him to come for alms the next day. Then he left. There, the Teacher instructed the monks: If Ajatashatru had not committed the five heinous crimes, he would have seen the truth while sitting on this seat. Therefore, even towards a burning stump, you should not generate evil thoughts, let alone towards sentient beings? And so on. The next day, Ajatashatru satisfied the Teacher and the Sangha with food. He also listened to the Dharma. The Teacher rejoiced in his generosity and then departed. From the time King Ajatashatru developed unwavering faith, wherever he was, on the roof or on the back of an elephant, etc., whenever he saw the Teacher, he would immediately jump down without hesitation. The Teacher would also use his miraculous powers to catch him from the sky and then place him on the ground. Afterwards, Ajatashatru instructed those who lived on milk porridge and his family: Wise ones, from now on I take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and I will always open the door to the Teacher and the fourfold assembly.
