If the teachings are entrusted only to the gods, there will be the fault of negligence; if they are entrusted only to humans, there will be the fault of short life. Therefore, considering that they cannot remain for a long time, they are entrusted to both. Thinking that after I pass into nirvana, the teachings will be protected by you, after instructing them in this way, the four of them also joyfully promised. Dhritarashtra protects from the east, Virudhaka from the south, Virupaksha from the west, and the son of Vaishravana protects from the north. After that, all the activities of the teachings were entrusted to the great Arhat Kashyapa, and Ananda was also instructed, saying, "You must also strive to do the work of the teachings." In this way, the son of the sage Kena saw and heard this, and was very convinced and listened to the Dharma. He also obtained the fruit of non-return. After that, the son of Kena made preparations in the evening to offer the Buddha and his retinue a meal the next day. His sister's son, named the sage Mountain, happened to come there and asked, "Are you inviting friends as guests?" He replied, "No, we are inviting the Buddha and the Sangha." There, just hearing the sound of the word "Buddha" caused his hair to stand on end, and he asked, "What are the Buddha and the Sangha like?" He explained in detail. After that, the Teacher and the Sangha came there, and Mountain and his five hundred retinue were very convinced, and they went forth and were fully ordained. The son of Kena saw this and asked, "Have you gone forth?" He replied, "I have gone forth." There, after the son of Kena had finished begging for alms, he gave away all the remaining items, and together with his five hundred retinue, he went forth and was fully ordained. The Teacher, together with those one thousand who had gone forth from the sage, agreed to spend the summer retreat on the banks of the river called Extremely Good. There, five hundred monks were entrusted to the venerable Maha-Kapina, two hundred and fifty were entrusted to the son of Maudgalyayana, and two hundred and fifty were entrusted to Shariputra. They taught the key instructions, and the people of Kapina attained the Arhat fruit, the people of the son of Maudgalyayana attained the non-returner fruit, and the people of Shariputra attained the

They thus attained the stream-entry fruit. This is also a difference in the sharpness and dullness of faculties. Those with dull faculties attained the stream-entry fruit by being cared for by Shariputra. If someone like Kapila were cared for by someone else, they would not even get a bit of warmth, it is said. Taming the Eighty-fourth, Angulimala Taming the eighty-fourth, Angulimala, is as follows: Again, in Shravasti, there was a Brahmin boy named Ahimsaka, who grew into a huge giant, immensely strong, capable of defeating even a thousand men. He could jump up and catch birds flying in the sky, and he had the speed of a fine horse. There was a Brahmin teacher with five hundred students, teaching them the Vedas and various sciences, and Ahimsaka quickly mastered them. Then, at that time, the Brahmin teacher, along with his retinue, was invited as a guest to a patron's house for three months, and Ahimsaka was left at home to take care of things. There, the teacher's wife expressed her desire to the boy, but he was mindful and wise, and feared sin, so he did not accept. The woman held a grudge and, before the Brahmin teacher returned, she lay on a net-like bed, wearing tattered clothes, and scratching wounds on her body, waiting there. Then, the Brahmin came and asked her, and she falsely said that Ahimsaka had done this. Because this boy was the son of the great minister Thousand Victories, he could not be directly opposed, so he thought he had to find a way for him to die on his own. So the Brahmin pretended to like Ahimsaka very much, and soon after, he said to Ahimsaka, "I have a secret teaching that I have never shown to anyone before, and now I will teach it to you. You need to kill a thousand people in seven days, cut off their heads, take each finger, make a necklace, and wear it on your body, and then you will see Brahma directly and immediately become Brahma after death." Ahimsaka knew that this was not the true Dharma, so he refused once or twice at first. The teacher scolded him, saying that he did not believe him, and then stuck a sword enchanted with a madness mantra into the ground. Ahimsaka felt great anger arise in his mind. So he took the sword and went outside the door.
