Land and, evil people obtain 16-199 The verses of being destroyed by reverence were also bestowed. There, in the middle of the road in a wide area, Devadatta himself was sitting in the middle of the row. Together with five hundred monks Gathering and eating. After that, the Teacher went from Shravasti to Rajagriha (around 6th century BC, present-day Rajgir, Bihar). Because the Sangha of the Noble Ones could not be distinguished, they went together with the Sangha of ordinary people with more virtuous roots. They spent the summer retreat in Rajagriha. At that time, the one who made offerings was the Noble Rahula. During those periods Devadatta and the four monks who followed him were ordered by the Teacher. The Sangha rebuked and admonished them, and even though they were restrained and admonished, they did not give up their efforts to divide the Sangha. During the summer retreat, there was a famine disaster. The monks who had attained supernatural powers acted as before, The Bhagavan wanted to abide in reality within for three months, Except for the time of begging for alms and Uposatha, they would not go before him. There, the five hundred ordinary monks, Devadatta provided with all necessities. After three months had passed, Devadatta led the five hundred people to a slightly further place, saying: The Shramana Gautama says to the Shravakas that those who live in solitude, beg for alms, wear rag robes, wear three robes, And have no undergarments will attain liberation. If anyone does not like these five ascetic practices, then stay away from the Shramana Gautama. Now let's draw lots. There, the five hundred people drew lots. After that, Devadatta stood up and left, The five hundred people also followed. There, Rahula stopped them, but they said: Such a famine has occurred, and the Teacher is staying in an invisible place. We rely on the power of Devadatta 16-200 And have not lost our lives. Otherwise, not even one would survive. After that, Devadatta proclaimed the five ascetic practices that he had made up himself, The five hundred people also drew lots. The five places are: not eating milk, meat, and salt, these are three, and clothes

Not wearing cut and sewn clothes, and dwelling on the edge of the village. Thus, holding five ascetic practices is the extent of the sangha's division. Then, Devadatta and his retinue prospered slightly, settled in a vast area belonging to Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir, Bihar), and sat on a throne himself, posing as the Buddha. He arranged for Kokalika and Khandada Bhikkhu to be like a pair of excellent ones, placing them on the left and right. Surrounded by five hundred monks, he acted as if he were teaching the Dharma, which seemed profound and vast. When the sangha was divided, the earth shook, meteors fell, and sounds were emitted. Thus, from the time of the sangha's division until it was reconciled, on that one day, the transmission of the Tripitaka's teachings, reading, reciting, memorizing, contemplating the meaning, and the lineage of generating the seeds of liberation were interrupted. Those who had not previously entered the path could not enter, those who had not attained the fruit could not attain it, those who had not separated from desire could not separate, and those whose defilements had not been exhausted could not be exhausted. In the one three-thousandfold world, the wheel of Dharma was interrupted, and all beings of gods and humans dwelt in displeasure and confusion. At that time, a pair of excellent ones were spending the rainy season on a southern mountain. Investigating the cause of the earthquake, they learned that it was the division of the sangha. Thus, through miraculous power, they came before the Teacher and reported, "We have come for the purpose of reconciling the sangha." The Blessed One praised them, saying, "Excellent! Four types of people increase the merit of Brahma: building stupas of the Tathagata's body in places where they did not previously exist, building monasteries there, reconciling the sangha, and cultivating the four immeasurables." Then, the pair of excellent ones went in that direction. As they approached, Devadatta saw them and thought, "Now, if these two great Shravakas also appear, there is no doubt that I will become the all-knowing Buddha." His mind was very pleased, and arrogance, pride, and conceit arose. So he rebuked Kokalika and Khandada Bhikkhu, these two monks, drove them away, and placed the pair of excellent ones on the left and right. Not long after, Devadatta imitated the Blessed One.
