Thinking that I should speak fairly. Also, the monks said to Devadatta, "If all your perfections come from the light protector with the ten powers, shouldn't you go to him?" He replied, "It is achieved by my own diligence, what use is he to me?" In this way, because he was ungrateful to the teacher and had the evil intention of breaking up the Sangha, Devadatta's magical powers immediately disappeared, and he no longer had the ability to recover them. However, Devadatta himself did not know that it had disappeared for a while. Chapter Eight: Subduing the Schism in the Sangha Chapter Eight: Subduing the Schism in the Sangha is: Then at another time, Devadatta thought in his heart, "The Blessed One has become old, will he give me the fourfold assembly or half of the assembly?" In order to ask for the assembly, he set out to go to the Blessed One. A monk named Nokchen, who was a god born in the Brahma realm, knew this and advised Maudgalyayana's son, who lived on Crocodile Killing Son Mountain, to ask the teacher to report it. He also went and reported it by means of magical powers. There, the Blessed One saw Devadatta and his friends Kokalika and other four monks coming from afar, and warned Maudgalyayana's son to keep his vow, and Maudgalyayana's son returned to his original abode. Soon after, Devadatta arrived and prostrated to the Blessed One and said, "Blessed One, you are old and frail, and you have forgotten the instructions for teaching the fourfold assembly. If you entrust the assembly to me, you will be able to abide in happiness with a light heart." The Blessed One thought that this was not the time to communicate in a gentle way, and said, "I will not entrust the assembly even to Shariputra and Maudgalyayana's son, who are like good vases, would I entrust it to you, a foolish, corpse-like, snot-eating person?" At that time, Devadatta became very angry, shook his head three times, thinking, "I will retaliate," and left. After that, the teacher admonished Ananda, and Ananda gathered the monks, whoever has faults

Moreover, do not associate with those who claim to have a correct view of the Vinaya. {I [now] will rebuke you, overpower you with power and speak. Endure the path of words} etc., advising them not to follow the wrong path. At that time, Devadatta consulted with four companion monks: If we can split the Sangha, we will be fulfilled in this life, and after death it will be widely known that even if Gautama (Gautama Siddhartha) is powerful, we have treated him like this. Some said that the Sangha could not be split, while others said that it could be done, because the old monks could be provided with supplies, and the young monks could be attracted with miscellaneous things. That's how it was done. The Blessed One went from Rajagriha to Rgya's place. King Bimbisara filled five hundred carts with rice, that is, rice that ripens in the husk of the rice, and offered it to the Blessed One. When Devadatta saw this, he said to Ajatasatru: I will also travel with many entourages, and now how the old king treats Gautama, you should also treat me like that. Ajatasatru also agreed. When the Tathagata first descended into the world, and when approaching the end of his life, and when a pair of supreme disciples had not yet been shown, and when there were no faults in view and discipline in the Dharma, and when the precepts had not yet been established, the Sangha would not split. When the wheel of Dharma has been turned for a long time, the end of life has not yet come, and there is a pair of supreme disciples, and faults in discipline and views have also appeared, it is a time when the Sangha may split. Because there are four companion monks, they can split the Sangha. After Devadatta heard these words spoken by the Blessed One to others, he worked even harder to split the Sangha. So, he satisfied five hundred monks with miscellaneous things, and then traveled with Devadatta. Ajatasatru also provided five hundred carts filled with rice and many supplies. In order to illustrate this principle, the past story of abandoning good fields and offering to inferior fields was reported to the Buddha.
