He said, "Come here," and they shaved their heads, wore robes on their bodies, subdued their senses, became peaceful, and covered their bodies with the Buddha's intention. At that time, many monks went to beg for alms, and unbelievers said this: "The Buddha has gone to the capital city of Magadha, Rajagriha. Since the true victor has already led everything, what else needs to be led later?" The monks were unable to answer. The next day, (the Buddha said) "Here is the great hero Sugata, who leads with the sacred Dharma. Everything is led by the Dharma. Which wise person would not rejoice?" By saying this, they were speechless. Then, when the venerable Shariputra had been fully ordained for fifteen days, he was fanning the Blessed One. At that time, the Buddha taught the Dharma to the wanderer Sanjaya, and Sanjaya saw the truth. Shariputra obtained liberation of mind from receiving the Arhat. Soon after, Maudgalyayana's son and other five hundred wanderers also manifested the fruit of Arhatship. From then on, the Sangha of Shravaka Arhat monks was a large Sangha with a definite number, namely one thousand six hundred and twenty Arhat monks. Except for the slight delay between seeing the truth and obtaining Arhatship, the others were all retinues of Arhats, so there was no Sangha of ordinary beings. There, for a short time, the first one hundred and twenty Arhats and the retinue of two hundred and fifty of a pair of supreme ones left to travel and teach the Dharma in different places. One thousand ascetics, including Kashyapa, were ordained, and the retinue of two hundred and fifty of a pair of supreme ones remained to listen to the Dharma at the teacher's side. Therefore, it was known there as the Sangha of one thousand two hundred and fifty monks. After that, although it was not certain who those people were, later on, it was said that there were mostly about one thousand two hundred and fifty Shravaka Arhat monks gathered near the teacher. When a pair of supreme ones became Arhats,

After the attainment of Pa, the Sangha of monks grew daily in all directions, making it difficult to ascertain its exact number. From then on, there were Arhats, noble disciples, and ordinary individuals, various and uncertain. The Thirty-Fourth: Taming the Naga Elapatra The Thirty-Fourth: Taming the Naga Elapatra: Again, the Blessed One traveled through the land of Kashi and resided in the Deer Park of the Sage Speaker, teaching the Dharma. The group of five, etc., dwelling in forests and rural monasteries, were made uncomfortable by venomous snakes, wild animals, sun, rain, and so forth. At that time, a householder named Zangden or Gelek built a temple and offered it. Before that, a Naga named Elapatra went to the Willow Grove and said: Who is the king, the master? Attachment is accompanied by dust, Non-attachment is free from dust. Who here speaks of attachment? These two verses are verses spoken by the Buddhas of the past. Such verses were written on the wall. The Yaksha Golden Light read and memorized them, wrote them down, and entrusted them to the Naga King Elapatra, saying: This is the speech of the Buddhas of the past, but no one knows its meaning. Take this thousand gold pieces with you, and if anyone knows its meaning, give them this gold. Go around to all the cities and palaces. If someone can speak its meaning, give them the thousand gold pieces. If no one can, proclaim that this is not a city and leave. Then, the Naga Elapatra transformed into the form of a Brahmin, took those two things, and toured many cities, but no one answered. So he proclaimed that they were not cities and denigrated them, finally arriving at Varanasi. There, too, he could not find anyone to answer, and as he was about to begin denigrating, people said: Go ask the monks in the monasteries. The disciple of the Sage Free from Afflictions, Mi Jin, came there and promised to answer in seven days. Mi Jin was acquainted with the group of five, so he asked the group of five, and they said: Ask the Blessed Buddha. Mi Jin asked the Buddha

What is the origin of dependent arising before 16-79 hearing. Having heard there, joy arose, and he went to the Blessed One, prostrated at his feet, and sat down. The Teacher taught the Dharma, and he immediately saw the truth. He asked to be ordained, (the Buddha said) first do what you promised to do, which is to transform into the form of a Naga Brahmin, and then be ordained later. Then, Mi Yin asked the Teacher about the meaning of the verses, and the Teacher also explained the meaning in detail. Then, Mi Yin also went to the place of the Naga Brahmin's form and explained it in detail. The Naga Ela Leaf also learned that the Buddha had come into the world. So he transformed himself into the appearance of a wheel-turning king with his retinue and went before the Teacher. The retinue was attracted to (the Naga King) and longed for him. The Teacher sternly rebuked him, saying: Come in your own form! After this instruction, (the Naga King) reported: We Nagas have enemies. So (the Buddha) ordered the Yaksha leader Vajrapani to protect the Naga Ela Leaf from harm by others. At that time, the Naga King appeared in his own form as a snake, with his tail coming from the Stone City, but his head reaching Varanasi, his body extremely long. Seven heads, each head with seven Ela trees growing on it. Countless insects and flies plagued it. At that time, the retinue was frightened, and (the Buddha) pointed and said: This is what you admired before, the one with the form of a wheel-turning king. They were frightened and disgusted, and thus became free from desire. Then, he placed that Naga in refuge and in the place of learning. In the future, Maitreya Buddha will prophesy for him, and after saying this, he disappeared. Then, Mi Yin also received full ordination through the "Come here" ceremony, and he is 16-80 the great and noble Katyayana. The Blessed One taught him the Dharma in a way that did not rely on the two extremes of existence and non-existence, and Katyayana thus attained the state of Arhat. Not long after that, the Teacher and his retinue were staying in the country of Magadha.
