Offer small balls of water and heavy things to those who drink milk. Do not offer anything else before his (referring to the Buddha) radiance fades. After resting a little, he went to the cemetery and used a corpse as a pillow. At that time, his body was even thinner than before, and his body seemed to have no moisture at all. The young men, young women, and shepherds of the city came and put cotton, flowers, and balls into his ears, and poked them out of his nostrils with wooden sticks. Or they put things in through his nostrils and poked them out through his ears, tossing them back and forth like this. Some people said, "Look, look at the flesh-eating ghost in the garbage heap!" They threw clods of earth and tiles at him, but he neither heard nor saw. However, he remained as before, without being discouraged. Twenty-second, the Release from Austerity. Twenty-second, the Release from Austerity is: After six years of practicing austerity in that way, he thought, "Now, all those who want to get rid of suffering can only do this much. But this cannot touch knowledge, vision, and enlightenment. If I practice meditation as I did before in the village of the farmer, perhaps I can attain enlightenment. But now I am so thin and weak that I cannot even generate such meditation. I must restore the radiance and strength of my body." Thinking this, he began to breathe comfortably, eat coarse foods such as rice porridge, anoint his body with sesame oil, and bathe with warm water. At this time, the five attendants lost faith, thinking, "This wise Gautama has retreated from asceticism, and now he will not gain anything." So they abandoned the Bodhisattva and went to Varanasi, where they were called the "Five Bhikkhus." After that, the Bodhisattva gradually regained the strength of his body and went to the village of Sdecan. There, the leader of that place was named Sdecan, and he had two daughters named Gama and Gastama. These two daughters were as perfect as jewels. They had heard that the Bodhisattva would become a Chakravartin, but they had not heard that he would renounce. They had heard that some women would observe such precepts and austerities for twelve years,
