Then a stream of bloody sweat came forth. Having practiced such austerities, he experienced intense and unbearable feelings, but he was not discouraged, and he initiated diligence. It was not that he did not train his body, but that he trained it. It was not dullness, but mindfulness was closely established. It was not distraction, 16-48 but loving-kindness was placed in equanimity in one place. Then, in the second period, he began to meditate on the formless absorption, and when he entered into the application, by blocking the outgoing and incoming breath, all the winds went to the crown of his head. An unbearable piercing pain arose in his head, as if it were being pierced by an iron nail. He was not discouraged, etc., as before. In the third period, when he actually attained the formless absorption, when he blocked the wind, it flowed from the two ear holes, like a blacksmith's bellows being blown. Thus, although he experienced unbearable feelings, he was not discouraged, etc., as before. In the fourth period, when he entered into equipoise upon perfecting the formless absorption, by blocking the flow of wind, his abdomen became extremely distended. He experienced piercing pain in his head and feelings like his body being cut open by a sharp water knife, and piercing pain like being hung in a pit of fire, but he was not discouraged, etc., as before. In the fifth period, he partook of poor food and little alcohol, namely, the broth of boiled Mon beans, or Chinese beans, or rice, etc. He would not partake of any other food until the color of that broth had faded. At that time, when the gods requested him to extract essence from the pores of his skin, he thought that to abandon food and take essence as his own was hypocrisy, deceit, falsehood, and deceiving others, and so he turned back the extraction of essence. As a result, his body became extremely emaciated and mad, but he was not discouraged, etc., as before. How did his body become so weak? His body was like an Asita shrub and a Kalika sapling, which wither and shrink when completely dried up. His head was also like a bumpy, old scalp. His eyeballs were sunken, like stars in a well. The ribs of his body were uneven, and his spine was like a braid of hair. When he wanted to stand, he would fall forward, and when he wanted to sit, 16-49 he would fall backward, so the upper and lower parts of his body took turns supporting him,

must fall off, and the roots of the hairs are all rotten, so when you touch the body with your hands, the hairs will fall to the ground. After that, the good color of the past also disappeared. Three gods came there, and one said, "Gautama is black." Another said, "It's blue." And another said, "It's purple." They said that. At that time, three metaphors arose in his mind: just as rubbing very wet wood in water will not produce fire, because both body and mind are attached to desire, so it is impossible to be liberated. In comparison, a slightly drier piece of wet wood is also like this, if the body is distanced from desire, but the mind is not distanced, it will not be liberated. Just as rubbing dry wood will produce fire, if both body and mind are distanced from desire, then one can know, see, and touch. After that, in the sixth period, when he rested a little, he slept on a very rough grass mat, and the rest was the same as before. He ate one grain of sesame, etc., and did not eat a second grain until its luster had disappeared, so his body became even more emaciated than before. In this way, he practiced asceticism with meager food, and not becoming emaciated, etc., were the same as before. At that time, King Śuddhodana sent two hundred and fifty people each day to inquire, and the gods also showed and sent the same number of people. Each day, those who returned would deliver news, and King Śuddhodana became even more saddened, and the concubines also slept on grass mats, and Yaśodharā also abandoned her ornaments and entered a state of asceticism. After that, the king, because Yaśodharā was pregnant and there was a possibility of harm, warned, "No one should speak to Yaśodharā about asceticism. And those who deliver news should not tell anyone, except me, about the Bodhisattva's asceticism." When the king heard this himself, although he was sad inside, he hid his expression and comforted the concubines with other topics. After that, in the seventh period, he thought that these ascetic practices alone were not enough, so he began to eat what is called extremely bad food...
