. This is the final resting place in the city of Kushinagar. After saying this, King Ajatashatru will faint and fall to the ground. There, you should have Ajatashatru lie successively in seven containers filled with fresh ghee, and the eighth container filled with sandalwood Goshirsha oil. This will revive him, and after teaching this, Mahakashyapa gradually went towards the city of Kushinagar. Immediately after the Blessed One's Nirvana, Indra and Brahma also specifically spoke of impermanence. Some of the gods wept, some rolled around, and some remained relying on the Dharma. Many monks who had not attained detachment were saddened 16-286 and lamented. Many relied on the Dharma, thinking that all pleasant and painful things are of the nature of separation. The Teacher himself had already said so. Aniruddha said to Ananda, if the monks are not gently suppressed, the gods will laugh. Ananda also gently signaled the monks who were grieving to suppress themselves. One hundred and nineteenth: Cremating the Holy Body One hundred and nineteenth: Cremating the Holy Body is: Then, when it dawned, Aniruddha urged Ananda to go to Kushinagar and said to the approximately five hundred assembled strongmen: Last night at midnight the Teacher passed into Nirvana. You should do what needs to be done and make offerings. Then the strongmen became sad and came with various offerings such as flowers and incense to offer to the Holy Body. Then the strongmen said to the Tathagata's Holy Body: How should we make offerings with cremation and so on? Ananda said: Like the body of a Chakravartin king, this and that should be done. Well, this cannot be completed in two or three days, so let's do it after seven days. Thus, every day the strongmen made offerings with many offerings. Other gods and humans also made countless offerings. After seven days, the various implements were also prepared. From the twin Sala tree grove to the city of Kushinagar.

The space between the stables, all the streets of the Grass City, and all the roads from the Grass City to the stupa adorned with the head ornaments of the giants were cleaned. They were decorated with victory banners, flags, and streamers. Various offerings such as flowers and incense were arranged. Just as one would treat the remains of a Chakravartin king, the Buddha's remains were treated with great reverence, placed in a jeweled casket, and adorned with umbrellas and garlands. The wives of the giants held up the curtains, the youths carried the casket, and the giants made offerings of garlands and so forth, saying, "Let's go!" When they lifted the casket of the Buddha's remains, they could not move it even a little. Since it would not move, through clairvoyance, they understood the thoughts of the gods, and so they said, "Let it be done according to the wishes of the gods!" The giant women held the curtains, the youths carried the casket, and the gods made offerings from above and below the Buddha's remains. The chief giants completed all these preparations, lifted it from the grove of twin sal trees, entered through the west gate of the city of Kushinagar (Grass City), passed through the center of the street, exited through the east gate, and were invited to the stupa adorned with the head ornaments of the giants. There, the gods rained down a shower of Mandarava flowers, and the scattered flowers from the grove of twin sal trees to the stupa were as deep as the knees. There, the giants, wishing to make offerings to the Tathagata's remains, covered the remains with cotton wool petals, wrapped them with five hundred layers of the finest linen, placed them in an iron frame, filled it with fragrant oil, placed it on top of a pile of fragrant wood, and began to light the fire, but they could not light it. There, through the clairvoyant observation of the non-regressor, and the words of the gods, it was known that no one could light the fire until the Teacher's remains had been seen by the Venerable Mahakashyapa. They informed the giants and waited a little. After that, the Venerable Mahakashyapa, with a retinue of five hundred monks, came to see the Blessed One's remains, and when they arrived in the sinful land, a livelihood-maker was holding a celestial flower. 16-2
