For seven months and seven days they requested, but they did not grant it. The king, the one to be tamed, said, "I am near the time of nirvana, please allow me to finish this work." Finally, they requested to offer umbrella food the next day, and the king granted it. The wise ministers advised, "Spread all the food prepared for three months on the ground, and let the feet of the Sangha tread on it, so that it can be enjoyed." They offered umbrella food to the Buddha and his retinue, and the Buddha also taught the Dharma and dedicated the merit. In this way, he established the army of border warriors and the people living in the enemy city in the bliss of heaven and liberation. When he returned, some monks demolished the huts. He said to them, "Do not demolish! As long as the huts remain, so will the merit increase. Similarly, so are the bedding, robes, and dwellings." The four hundredth story, a story that happened on the road to Five Graspings. The four hundredth story, the story that happened on the road to Five Graspings is: Then, the Blessed One went to the bank of the Ganges River in the southern Five Graspings. A monk requested the Blessed One to explain how to attain Arhatship through a concise Dharma. The Blessed One saw a piece of wood floating in the Ganges River and said, "This piece of wood does not approach this shore, that shore, or the middle, is not picked up, is not seized by humans or non-humans, and does not rot in the water, it will flow to the ocean. Similarly, you should not cling to this shore, that shore, or clinging, etc., and you will tend towards nirvana." The Blessed One explained the meaning of that concise Dharma in detail, and that monk attained Arhatship. Nearby, there was an old cowherd named Gawa, who was sitting with his staff stuck in the ground while herding cows, and he heard those teachings. When a frog was also listening to the Dharma, the cowherd Gawa inadvertently stuck his staff into the frog's back. Although it hit a vital point, the frog thought, "If I make a sound, it will hinder others from listening to the Dharma," so it endured. That frog died immediately and was reborn as a god of the Four Great Kings race. He heard the Dharma in front of the Buddha and realized the truth.

Now the cowherd joyfully requested: Venerable one, please liberate me from not clinging to this shore or the other shore, from the place of non-decay. He was given the teaching: Have the cows been given to their owners? If not, they will go to their own places. Even so, they must be given. Then the cowherd joyfully obtained great power of Dharma and went away uttering a great sound of "Fear! Fear!" He met five hundred cowherds who knew him, and they asked why he was afraid. He said he was afraid of birth, old age, sickness, and death, and they said those would cease. Similarly, many piles of grass, many piles of wood, and those who came on the road also heard it, and until they returned, it was the same as before. Then, when they went to a mountain, they heard the sound of fear, and some panicked and fled, while others put on armor. There they met a hero who asked why they were afraid. He spoke as before, and they were reassured. Then Joyfully gave the cows to their respective owners. Leading five hundred cowherd friends, they came before the Teacher and went forth. By listening to the Dharma, those five hundred attained the state of Arhat at that very moment. In India, there are no yaks, so those very large animals are translated here as cowherds and cows, but it would be better to translate them as herdsmen and livestock. Then, the Blessed One and his retinue went to the Ganges River at Pancha-lena in the south, and when they crossed the Ganges, the Blessed One sometimes went on a boat, and sometimes he walked on the Ganges. There, five hundred geese, five hundred fish, and five hundred turtles circumambulated the Blessed One with devotion and heard a four-line verse of Dharma. Then, when they reached this shore of the Ganges, they died and were reborn as gods of the Four Great Kings' lineage, and by listening to the Teacher's Dharma, they attained the sight of truth. There, five hundred pretas, like burning tree stumps, with bellies like mountain ravines, mouths like needle eyes, and flames blazing, came and circumambulated the Buddha, and requested: Because of our bad karma, we cannot even find water, let alone saliva. Blessed One, please grant us water! Then he showed them the Ganges River, but they mostly found it very dry, and now it is like a stick.
