Saying, "Those who have not gone to the garden, look here." Then, the Licchavis came before the Teacher, and extensively listened to the Dharma teachings that were bestowed. There, a Brahmin boy named Serkya's son praised the Teacher with verses. The Licchavis gave him five hundred upper garments. Then, the Licchavis requested that he come for the umbrella offering the next day. First, Amra Administrator invited him. He said, "He deceived us, but we will still entertain him," and then left. After that, Serkya's son offered the five hundred upper garments to the Teacher, and spoke of the five benefits of the Tathagata's coming into the world. The next morning, Amra's administrator 16-239 offered alms and listened to the Dharma. He commanded Ananda, and Ananda placed his foot on the threshold of the iron gate of the city of Vaishali, recited the sutra for entering the city of Vaishali, dispelling all the spirits that spread disease and pacifying all diseases. Afterwards, the Licchavis also offered umbrellas and other extensive offerings, and then resided in the northern Sala tree grove of the city called Light City near Vaishali. At that time, the famine was very severe, so he commanded: "Monks, each of you should reside in a place where you have the ability to provide food. I also will stay with Ananda." After saying this, the monks also relied on various different villages and places, and lived scattered. There, the Tathagata became very ill, so ill that he was about to pass away. Thinking that now that the Sangha has dispersed, it is not the time to pass into Nirvana, he suppressed the feeling with samadhi and made a special effort to live on. Sixty-sixth In Mithila and others Sixty-sixth In Mithila and others. Named Mithila and Sala Village. From then on, after three months, he stayed in the mango grove of Mithila and smiled. When asked the reason, he told the Jataka story of the Teacher himself being reborn as King Mahadeva, and showed the seats of the four Buddhas in Lumbini. After that, the Blessed One received food in Sala Village.

When he entered into meditative equipoise, the evil Mara caused the Thus-Gone One to receive no alms at all, making it as if the alms bowl had been washed and set aside. Then, as he was returning, the evil Mara transformed himself into a Brahman boy and followed after the Buddha, 16-240 asking, "Did you find any morsels of food?" The Buddha replied, "By disparaging the Thus-Gone One, you have accumulated not merit, but demerit. The Buddhas are difficult to overcome. Evil one, do you not know this?" Mara said, "Now go for alms and you will find some." The Buddha replied, "I need nothing at all. Alas, how exceedingly happy I live! How are the gods of clear light? They eat food of joy!" The Blessed One thought, "He knows my mind," and, ashamed, he disappeared. Seventy-seventh, Throwing the Stone. Seventy-seventh, Throwing the Stone: Then, he went to the land of evil. There, on the road, was a very large and hard stone that people had to go around. The five hundred giants of the land of evil thought, "If we could move this stone to another place or destroy it completely, the road would be easy and our fame would be great." So, the five hundred giants tried to move or destroy the stone with various methods, but they could neither move it nor destroy it. At that time, the Blessed One came there and asked, "What are you inhabitants doing?" They replied, "If we could make this path good, it would be great to remove this stone." "Then shall I remove it?" "Please remove it." Then, the Blessed One threw the stone into the sky with the toe of his right foot, so far that it was unbearable to look at. The giants were frightened and terrified. The Buddha ground the stone into powder in the sky and it fell down. They asked, "Where did this dust come from?" The Buddha replied, "From that stone." "Too bad!" "Then shall I put it back together?" "Please put it back together." Immediately, there was no obstacle to walking on the road, and the dust gathered in the nearby area, and the stone became as it was before. Then the giants asked, "With what power did the Blessed One throw that stone?" The Buddha replied, "From my father and mother." 16-241
