Moreover, the heat of the flames of hell scorched the sky and did not fall to the ground. Shariputra, with his blissful samadhi, filled the hell realm with water. Maudgalyayana said, "Gift-holder, come here!" As a result, hundreds and thousands appeared. The Blessed One's brother, Gift-holder, was told to come, and so he came and touched the feet of the two supreme ones. When asked about his suffering, he said, "Above all the general suffering of the Avici hell, there are four additional sufferings: being crushed by burning iron mountains, being cut by thirty-two knives, having one's head ground into powder by a burning iron hammer, and being crushed like rice flour by elephants coming from four directions." These are also the results of, in order, throwing stones at the Teacher, causing schism in the Sangha, killing the Arhat Utpalavarna, and cursing the Teacher. Later, it was said that he was prophesied to become a Pratyekabuddha, so he said, "Then in the meantime, I must endure the suffering of Avici hell." Kokalika's tongue was plowed by a hundred plows, and even when the Brahma god urged him to generate faith in the two supreme ones, he would not listen. At that time, seeing the two supreme ones, he generated hatred, saying, "These two sinners, even if I am born in hell, they will come!" As soon as he said this, his tongue was plowed by a thousand plows. Light Protector went to the place of the Completer, prostrated at the feet of the two supreme ones, and said, "I used to preach false Dharma, and now my tongue is being plowed by five hundred plows, and if my disciples in the human realm talk about it, the suffering will increase even more." And so on. Although this account of going to see the hell realm is from later, it is told here because of its close connection to history. The fourth, the path to Vaishali. The fourth, the path to Vaishali, is as follows: When the Teacher went to Rajagriha, the spirits that spread plagues migrated to Vaishali, so a great and unbearable epidemic broke out there. The leader of the Licchavis of Vaishali, a Brahmin named Arrow-shaft Great, had a dream in which a god prophesied: If the Blessed One comes to Vaishali, the plague will be pacified. He told this to the people of Vaishali.

Then, when they discussed who to send as a messenger, they dispatched the attendant Arrow Great. He said, 'Will Ajatashatru kill me?' The assembly said, 'In no country is a messenger killed.' 16-234 He went to Rajagriha. He went before the Blessed One and requested the Thus-Gone One to go to Vaishali. He said, 'Inform the king. If he allows, then I will come.' He conveyed this to the Licchavis, and they said, 'You yourself should inform him.' Then, on that occasion, Arrow Great informed Ajatashatru, and the king said, 'If Vaishali is destroyed, my wish will be easily fulfilled. I will not allow it.' He rebuked him with harsh words. Arrow Great was also expelled from the palace, and as he was about to return to Vaishali, the wise ministers said, 'Please wait a moment. We will pray to the gods.' Having said this, they went before the king and reported, 'Whether the king allows it or not, the Blessed One, with great compassion, will not abandon any sentient being, and will surely go to Vaishali.' The king said, 'Then, very well.' Then he came before the king, and the king said, 'Now a vow must be made. If you all offer worship as I do, then I will allow it.' He conveyed this to the Licchavis, and the Licchavis replied, 'The king is only one person, but we are a collective. Why should we not do it?' They sent back a message. Then the king prepared parasols and other offerings for the Blessed One and his retinue, and reported, 'Please subdue the Naga Sogma Nomé, who creates blood feuds where we have no blood feuds. Please subdue it.' The Blessed One agreed. At that time, the Teacher said to Ananda, 'Ananda, in the north there are five benefits: abundant flowers, fruits, and water, easy alms gathering, and people who are upright in nature. From here, I will go north to subdue Sogma Nomé.' 16-235 Then, Ajatashatru decorated and arranged all the roads from Rajagriha to the Ganges. When the people of Vaishali heard this, they also arranged the roads on the north bank of the Ganges even more beautifully.
