Having crossed his legs, he sat upright. There, a giant named Gya Yungpo, who belonged to the chief of the giants and who had faith in the asceticism of long-distance flyers, heard of the greatness of the Blessed One and understood that the Dharma of the Buddha was superior to the asceticism of long-distance flyers. With great faith, he offered the Blessed One a pair of new silk robes that were like the color of gold, and promised, "I will provide for the Teacher and the Sangha." He cut the silk and immediately put it on his body, and the color of the Blessed One's body became clearer, more radiant, and extremely visible than before. Ananda reported, "I have been serving as an attendant for more than twenty years, and I have never seen such a bright complexion. What is the reason for this?" The Blessed One replied, "On the night when a Bodhisattva attains complete and perfect enlightenment, and on the night when a Tathagata passes into complete Nirvana, the complexion becomes especially bright." Then, he went again and bathed in the river Hiranyavati. After crossing the Hiranyavati, he put on a single robe, dried his body, and sat down, saying to Ananda, "The son of the blacksmith, Cunda, thinks that others offered the Tathagata the last meal and then passed into Nirvana, and that you have not gained merit but have gained demerit, and he is feeling regretful. You should go and dispel his regret by saying that the ripening of the two places is the same: where he received alms and became enlightened, and where he received alms and passed into Nirvana, the two have the same ripening, bringing about life, complexion, strength, wealth, good fortune, prosperity, retinue, and so on. This is because he has done and accumulated deeds." Ananda also dispelled his regret as the Blessed One had said. Then, the Blessed One, on the road through the fields and grasslands of the land of the giants, felt discomfort in his back halfway, and lay down as before to rest. The Blessed One said to Ananda, "Recite the limbs of enlightenment." After he recited them, the Blessed One asked, "Did you recite diligence?" Ananda replied, "I recited it." The Blessed One then spoke of the greatness of diligence and sat down in the lotus position.

At that time, another monk also spoke of the greatness of listening to the Dharma. The One Hundred and Fifteenth Act: Going to Kushinagar. The one hundred and fifteenth act, going to Kushinagar, is: Thereafter, the Bhagavan went to the city of Kushinagar, and near the giant village of Kushinagar, he went to the grove of twin sala trees, and between the twin sala trees, he turned his head north to the Dharma throne. He said, "Tonight, at midnight, I will pass into nirvana." Ananda did so. The Tathagata lay down there on his right side, foot upon foot, maintaining the perception of light, mindfulness, and awareness, and the perception of passing into nirvana. There, Ananda became very displeased and praised him greatly. Ananda pleaded, "Bhagavan, having abandoned six great cities, why do you pass into nirvana in this wretched little city of Tosha?" The Bhagavan said, "Do not call this a wretched city." The Bhagavan told the stories of King Kusha and King Lekton, and said, "Within the twelve yojanas surrounding the grove of twin sala trees and the stupa adorned with the giant's headdress, I have previously taken and abandoned six bodies of a Chakravartin king. The seventh is this present one, and there will be no place to abandon the eighth." At that time, a monk named Exemplar was sitting in front of the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan said, "Monk, do not sit in front of me, go away!" He went out. Because of the glory of that monk, the gods could not come there. The gods said, "The appearance of a Buddha is rare, and tonight he will pass into nirvana. Because he is before our eyes, we cannot go to make offerings." This was to prevent the gods from complaining. There, within a radius of twelve yojanas, there was no place not covered by gods, not even enough space to stick a cane. Then, Ananda asked how to make offerings to the Teacher's relics. The Bhagavan explained in detail how to make offerings as one would to the relics of a Chakravartin king. The Bhagavan then said to Ananda, "The giants of Kushinagar, the Teacher has passed into nirvana near you."
