Has he not transcended the law of aging? Even the gods have not transcended the law of aging! He commanded: Turn the chariot around and go back to the palace. Then, upon arriving at the palace, he thought to himself, "Look, I have not transcended aging either!" After that, King Śuddhodana asked the charioteer, "Does the prince enjoy playing in the garden?" The charioteer reported the previous events in detail. The king thought, "Could it be that the words of the diviners will not come true? This prince might become a renunciate! I will give him a great deal of the five desirable qualities, so that he will not renounce." Thinking this way, he entertained the Bodhisattva with all kinds of desirable qualities. Then, again, in the same way as before, he rode in the chariot and went to the garden. He saw a sick person afflicted by illness, an old man with gray hair, hunched over, and emaciated. He asked, "What is this?" They replied, "O god, this is someone who is sick." "Have I not transcended the nature of illness?" "Even the gods have not transcended the nature of sickness!" Again, he went back to the palace and thought, "Look, I have not transcended illness either!" Then, the entertaining with the five desirable qualities continued as before, until (he would not renounce). Again, the Bodhisattva entered the chariot and went to the garden. He saw people carrying a corpse on a stretcher, covered with cloth, with a torch carried in front, and many people walking in front, with mourners following behind. He asked, "What is this?" They replied, "O god, this is someone who has died." "Have I not transcended the law of death?" "Even the gods have not transcended the law of death!" Again, he went back to the palace and thought, "Look, I have not transcended the law of death either!" From "he asked" to "entertaining with all kinds of desirable qualities" was the same as before. Then the gods of the Pure Abodes thought, "Although this Bodhisattva has the power of cause, even the great power of cause depends on conditions, so we should urge him to renounce." So they manifested a renunciate, with shorn hair, wearing saffron robes, going from house to house begging for alms. Then, again, as before, the Bodhisattva entered the chariot and went to the garden, and saw a renunciate with shorn hair.

Tree Dressed in saffron robes, holding a begging bowl in hand, he walks and travels, observing. What is this? This is a renunciate, disciplined and virtuous, etc. Then turn the chariot towards this side. He complied and went in that direction. The Bodhisattva asked him questions. He explained in detail the circumstances of his renunciation. 16-36 The Bodhisattva praised, saying, "Good!" Then he returned to the palace. Alas! I should renounce from home to homelessness, cultivating joy and contemplating this matter. Fifteenth: Meditating at the Farmer's Place, etc. Fifteenth: Meditating at the Farmer's Place, etc.: The king again questioned the charioteer, etc., similar to before. The king thought, "Now I will send the youth to the village of farmers, to distract his mind." So he said to the Bodhisattva, "Young man, come here! Go to the village of farmers and observe the work." The Bodhisattva was disgusted by the three: old age, sickness, and death. Although he longed for renunciation, he listened to the words of his father, King Śuddhodana, and rode in the chariot to the village of farmers. On the way, five hundred treasures opened automatically, and a voice said, "Young man, we are the treasures of your relatives, please accept us!" The Blessed One said, "I do not need you, go away! Whoever speaks to me of death, those will become words of death. Soon after I die, others will also talk about this." After speaking, those treasures entered the great ocean. Afterwards, he went to the village of farmers and observed the farming. Seeing the farmers with rough hands and feet, the oxen exhausted, and the plowing, etc., great compassion arose in his heart. He said, "May you all experience happiness!" So he let the farmers rest and unyoked the oxen. Afterwards, seeing the farmers suffering so much, his heart was even more saddened. Sitting in the shade of a jambu tree, the first dhyana samadhi naturally arose and he realized it. That samadhi of the Bodhisattva 16-37
