If it does not decay, it will flow into the ocean. Likewise, you too will flow from this shore, the other shore, or attachment, etc., into nirvana. In short, the meaning of that was explained in detail, so he attained the state of an Arhat. Nearby, there was an old cowherd named Gawa, who was herding cows and sitting with his staff stuck in the ground, and he heard those teachings. A frog was also listening to the Dharma, and the cowherd Gawa inadvertently stuck his staff in the ground, hitting the frog's back. Although it hit a vital spot, I thought, if I make a sound, others listening to the Dharma will be disturbed, so I endured it. 16-259 That frog died immediately and was reborn as a god of the Four Great Kings race. By listening to the Dharma in the presence of the Teacher, he saw the truth. Now the cowherd Gawa requested: Venerable one, I also do not cling to this shore or the other shore, please make me not decay, please liberate me. The Buddha replied: Have the cows been handed over to their owners? They have not been handed over, they are returning to their own places. Even so, they must be handed over. Then the cowherd Gawa obtained great power of Dharma and went away uttering a great sound of "Fear! Fear!" He met five hundred cowherds he knew, and they asked him what he was afraid of. He said he was afraid of birth, old age, sickness, and death, and those people turned away. Likewise, many bundles of grass, many trees, and those who came on the road also heard it and turned away again, just like before. Then he went to a mountain, and hearing the sound of "Fear!", some fled in panic, and some put on armor. There he met a warrior and asked him what he was afraid of, he said as before, and so he was relieved. Then Gawa handed over the cows to their respective owners. Leading five hundred cowherd friends, he came before the Teacher and became a monk. By listening to the Dharma, those five hundred immediately attained the state of an Arhat. In the noble land of India, there are no yaks, those greatest ones here translate it as cowherd and cow, but it would be better to translate it as shepherd and livestock. Then, the Blessed One, together with his retinue, went to the Ganga bank of the Southern Five-Taking, and when crossing the Ganga, the Blessed One sometimes went by boat, sometimes

Ga (place name) is where the Blessed One arrived after placing his feet on the Ganges. There, five hundred swans, five hundred fish, and five hundred turtles circumambulated the Blessed One with devotion, and the Blessed One spoke to them each a four-line Dharma teaching. Then, the Blessed One reached this shore of the Ganges. 16-260 Those animals died and were reborn as gods of the Four Great Kings' race, and by listening to the Dharma, they attained the vision of truth. There, five hundred pretas, their bodies like burnt tree stumps, their bellies like mountain ravines, their mouths like needle eyes, and flames blazing fiercely, came and surrounded the Blessed One, pleading: Because of our bad karma, we cannot even find water, let alone saliva. Blessed One, please grant us water! Then, the Blessed One showed them the Ganges River, but they felt that this river was almost completely dried up, and now it is guarded by those holding sticks and battle axes. The Blessed One commanded the god of the Ganges: Do not guard it! The god replied: I have not guarded it, but it is guarded by their own karma! By the miraculous power of the Buddha, those pretas opened their mouths, and Maudgalyayana's son poured water into them, allowing them to attain a state of satisfaction, and their bellies swelled. They died with faith in the Buddha and were reborn as gods of the Four Great Kings' race, and by listening to the Blessed One's Dharma, they attained the vision of truth. An intermediate summary: In short, he satisfied the frog Gawa, boats, swans, fish, turtles, and five hundred pretas. The one hundred and fifth, the poor Brahmin seeing the truth, etc. The one hundred and fifth, the poor Brahmin seeing the truth, etc.: Then, the Blessed One passed through a place called Youthful Nurturing Land, and Arm Ornament Land, and Jewel Land, and Sala Strength Land, and Sala's Strength Land, and Gold Bushel Land, and all the places, and when he reached the end of the Shravasti region, a poor Brahmin was plowing in the rice field without having eaten breakfast. Then, his daughter came to deliver food, and it happened that the Blessed One came in that direction, and the Brahmin developed faith, put down the unfinished field, and offered the food to the Buddha. The Buddha pointed to an old well and said to pour the food there, and he did so, and the well was immediately filled with food, and steam rose up. Then
