The desire to abandon. The action is the vow to abstain from killing. The ultimate restraint is the complete action of the body. The ways of giving good and non-good to others, as well as the final examination of them, and the three fruits of both, etc., should be understood in detail elsewhere. Ninth, in some places, laziness is mentioned instead of desire in craving. In some places, adding malice and distraction, it is also said to be seven, which is very common. This is because malice, distraction, and agitation are counted as one. Among them, desire in craving, and malice, are obstacles to higher morality. Dullness and sleep, regret and distraction, are obstacles to the training of samadhi. Doubt is an obstacle to the training of wisdom. The so-called seven and five obscurations are different ways of counting, so do not think separately. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: "Agitation and regret, malice and dullness, sleep and desire, and doubt, these five obscurations, are thieves who steal the wealth of virtue, please know." In this way, all seven are listed, and the term "five obscurations" is used, which is the same as the previous way of counting. Tenth, it explains the five faults, explains the eight actions of abandonment, and how each of them becomes an antidote. The first is: laziness, forgetfulness, sinking and agitation, non-application, and application. The first is: not being interested in meditation practices such as samadhi. The second is: forgetting the object of samadhi. Sinking is said to occur when one is overwhelmed by sleep and dullness. If these three are mentioned in order, the actual sinking is when the clarity of the mind has not completely disappeared, but the object is not clear. The dullness caused by sleep, which is similar to it, is when the clarity of the mind is also gone, and it becomes dark and unclear. Agitation is said to be a conceptual thought that is part of attachment. The essence is attachment to food and clothing, which leads to conceptual thoughts about business and farming, as well as delighting in the five good objects of desire, and recalling past agitation and play, etc. Non-application means that when in meditation, knowing that sinking and agitation have arisen, one does not apply the antidote to them. Application means that when there is no sinking or agitation, the mind is left in its natural state.

When in that state, one should strive to counteract dullness and agitation. Secondly, there are eight: faith, aspiration, diligence, pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, intention, and equanimity. Faith is: pure faith induced by delighting in the qualities of samadhi. Aspiration is: seeking the desired object, samadhi. Diligence is: delighting in meditating on samadhi. Pliancy is: making body and mind serviceable. Mindfulness is: not forgetting the object of samadhi. Awareness is: knowing all things such as the abiding of the mind and the abandonment of dullness and agitation. Intention is: directing the mind towards the means of abandoning dullness and agitation. Equanimity is: equanimity of formation, that is, relaxing effort. Thirdly, when initially entering meditation, it is a fault not to engage in meditation due to laziness. The antidote to this is that faith and aspiration arise, thereby initiating diligence. Diligence directly eliminates laziness. Through familiarity with diligence, pliancy arises, where there is no discomfort even if body and mind are exerted in virtue, thus laziness will not arise again. That is, faith gives rise to aspiration, aspiration gives rise to diligence, and diligence gives rise to pliancy; these four occur as cause and effect. Having entered meditation, when initially abiding in equipoise, if one is overcome by discursive thoughts and forgets to abide on the object, then it is difficult to accomplish samadhi. Therefore, the antidote to this fault is to settle the mind on the object with mindfulness. When abiding in equipoise and the mind is somewhat settled, either dullness or agitation will make the mind unserviceable. Therefore, the antidote to this fault is awareness, which recognizes dullness and agitation. If one exerts oneself and cultivates the antidote, but does not make effort when dullness and agitation do not arise, then dullness and agitation will enter. Therefore, intention, which strives for the antidote there, is very important. When abiding in perfect tranquility without effort, if one makes effort for the antidote, that itself will become distraction. Therefore, one should relax effort there and cultivate equanimity. Here it is said: The eighty-four thousand collections of Dharma, completely and very clearly expounded in a few words, this skillful exposition is also the kindness of the Guru. Of speech...
