O! When thoughts such as craving, sorrow, and regret are in turmoil, if one recognizes that the place where these thoughts arise is without essence, then these thoughts naturally subside, which is approaching tranquility. Then, when focused, dullness and excitement do not enter; if not focused, when dullness and excitement enter, one cultivates by focusing with effort, which is making the mind-stream one. Then, even without effort, when one abides single-pointedly in the state of clarity and emptiness, one relaxes the effort and places it in a state of equanimity, which is called equipoise, that is, the accomplishment of the ninth stage of abiding. If one becomes accustomed to this, then these winds that move internally and externally will turn to benefit the body, and the body will generate the bliss of great pliancy, and the mind will also become very workable, so the bliss of mental pliancy will also arise, and thereby one will obtain the special actual calm abiding. Although there are many things to be examined in these, the self-tradition is that when the ninth stage of abiding is accomplished, then actual calm abiding is accomplished. Second, regarding insight, there are two types: how it arises from the scriptures of the Perfection Vehicle, and the uncommon aspects of mantra. The first is again divided into two, mainly engaging in analytical meditation, which is mentioned in many sutras such as the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra. The method is that, relying on hearing, one understands the meaning of emptiness, relying on the wisdom arising from thought, one repeatedly generates certainty, and when the understanding of emptiness becomes very strong, one temporarily cultivates calm abiding, and whether or not one has obtained pliancy, one should accomplish the ninth stage of abiding. Then, in the state of calm abiding, with objects such as the internal and external five aggregates as the object of focus, one remembers the conclusions previously established through the wisdom arising from thought, and generates certainty that these things appear but are without inherent existence, combining this process with calm abiding, and dwelling slightly in a state of non-grasping. Repeating this process again, alternating between the certainty of view and the cultivation of calm abiding, when the duration of the clear appearance of emptiness becomes longer in the state of calm abiding of dwelling without grasping on the object, one reduces analysis; when the clear appearance of emptiness becomes smaller, one increases analysis. Finally, when the clear appearance of emptiness becomes unwavering, mental engagement

Apart from a few special cases that stimulate clear appearance, one should abandon analysis and cultivate the union of calm abiding and insight. In this, there are both the practice of meditating on all objects as one, and, as mentioned above, the yogi gradually cultivating by means of the stages of the ground, first gaining stable clear appearance in the former, then cultivating clear appearance in the latter, and so on. These details should be learned from Kamalaśīla's three-part Stages of Meditation and the translator Yeshe De's Means of Generating Insight, and other reliable early treatises. The second is to enter into seeking the sutras of definitive meaning with faith in excellent qualities, according to the view of the non-conceptual dharani and the Mahāyānottaratantraśāstra, etc. By relying on hearing, one can well ascertain the reality of the tathāgatagarbha, because one understands that the Buddha's body pervades all knowable things without near or far, so one is certain that all buddhafields are pervaded by the teacher, and thus one is never separated from the teacher, thereby recollecting the Buddha. Because one sees all sentient beings as having the essence of the Buddha, one generates love and great compassion for the reason of being of the same kind as oneself. Because one knows that all samsara and nirvana are manifestations of the mind, one generates faith in the actual antidote to obscurations—superior insight wisdom—as something to be cultivated. In practicing it, one should follow the scriptures and the guru, first generating faith, then generating the wisdom of hearing, then generating bodhicitta preceded by compassion, and thus abiding in the entrance to non-conceptual samadhi. Having thus abided, the way in which meditation-born wisdom arises is: first is samadhi, as Nagarjuna said, "From the eye and form arises stainless wisdom." This means that the six senses are relaxed, and one abides without obstruction in whatever appears, and from the fruit of that samadhi, two kinds of vision arise: just as the space element enters into form, what is seen by the non-conceptual samadhi of the mind is seeing the nature of the mind as naturally luminous, and that all conceptual thoughts are only a moment, unable to connect before and after, and the appearance of the latter mind entering into the former appearance is extremely false. Thus realizing.
