And so it goes on like that. If the three appearances do not arise except for those special times such as death, then it would necessarily follow that conceptual thoughts would not arise at other times either, because if the cause ceases, the result will not arise. Because from the three fundamental appearances, all the appearances of body, speech, and mind arise, and because they are the proximate uses of the three doors. From that, the vessel world also arises along with them. Thus, in Nagarjuna's "Stages of the Bodhi Practice," it says: "The wind that arises from the three emptinesses, that itself exists everywhere, its vehicle itself changes, its nature is also empty. From consciousness arises wind, from that fire truly arises, from that water arises, from that also earth arises. From those arise aggregates, from that also arise sources, from that the wisdom natures, one hundred and sixty return." Thus it is said. In detail, the three fundamental appearances are bliss, but that is not unchanging, but changing. That which changes is the bliss mixed with the five elements, therefore from that the gross five elements arise, and from the distinctions of the aggregation of the elements, the five aggregates arise, and among them, the inner dharma of beings gathered by their own continuum, the six sources arise, and the five or six objects arise in the manner of objects of enjoyment and proximate use. From that, the five consciousnesses named the five wisdoms arise. In general, the dharmata of the ground period is also the five wisdoms, and by its power, the adventitious stains also abide in the place where the three fundamental appearances arise, therefore the name of the five wisdoms is established in relation to the ground of samsara. But the five wisdoms or five consciousnesses here are a part of the twenty-five gross elements, therefore they are conceptual thoughts, and that is also the summary of the eighty natures and so on. For example, steam arises from moist earth, from that dew forms, dew gathers and becomes water, an image appears in the water, that is moved by the wind and appears as the image flowing and so on. Thus, like moist earth are the three fundamental appearances, like steam arising when driven by heat is the wind.

Happiness arises from faith. 5-350 Transformed into the form of the five elements. The coarse five elements are like dewdrops. The nature of the five aggregates is established, like reflections in water. Just as many images appear, they appear in their respective objects. Just as images sway, the conceptual thoughts of the five consciousnesses arise. Moreover, when water seeps into the earth, just as all images and so on disappear, at the time of death or sleep, or in other circumstances, when the power of the sole impeller is exhausted, all of these will dissolve into the fundamental three appearances in the manner of leaving behind imprints. As it is said in the Vajramala: The solid element and the nature of water, likewise fire and wind, having been taken by the five consciousnesses, will be born in the three realms. In these five aggregates, the characteristic of compounded elements is: form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, these five. Equality, individual discernment, and accomplishing actions, like a mirror and the dharmadhatu, these are the five consciousnesses. The mind-base and the eye, likewise the ear, nose, tongue, and body, these are where the bases arise. And it is said: The senses themselves go to their own objects, becoming that and that. Whatever objects the senses use, that is just mere appearance. What is said is that the senses together with their objects are just appearances of the mind. Here, many people establish "appearance" as the three minds of the path, and then mix and combine it with the appearance of desirable qualities, which is a flawed explanation because they want to practice in a hidden meaning. Even if explaining the three appearances, it is better to combine them with the fundamental three appearances. If one wants to combine the hidden meaning, there is no fault if one understands the classification of the ground-time in which the hidden meaning of the paths arises. Again, it is said: From these five elements, there is also nature, attachment and non-attachment, etc., from which arise virtuous and non-virtuous actions, from which arises rebirth. The way in which the coarse elements dissolve and leave behind imprints is: from the three appearances arise the five consciousnesses, etc., and the way in which the conceptual thoughts of nature arise, as previously explained. By this, virtuous and non-virtuous actions are committed.
