Collected Teachings of Dolpopa Sherab Gyaltsen JT115, Great Commentary on the Five Stages: The Intent of the Great Vajradhara. 5-136 ༄༅། ། Great Commentary on the Five Stages: The Intent of the Great Vajradhara. ༄། །The order of entering the treatise. ༄༅། ། Great Commentary on the Five Stages: The Intent of the Great Vajradhara. ༄༅། །Oṃ svāsti. I prostrate to all the gurus, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas! That great bliss wisdom, though free from change, is close to the lifeblood of all things. The manner of the various magical illusion networks, though appearing in all ways, is the sacred object born together. The supreme compassion without object, though free from all extremes, pervades with benefit and happiness. That primordially free from elaboration, the ultimate truth, is the master of the wheel of gurus, I bow with reverence. The definitive secret of all the tantras is the way of teaching through the five stages, the treatises of Nagarjuna. To clearly {open [make]} manifest through the kindness of the guru, the impartial and intelligent person should rejoice. Here, those Bodhisattvas who wish to quickly attain unsurpassed enlightenment through the mantra vehicle should diligently engage in the two stages. As it is said: The Dharma taught by the Buddhas truly abides in two stages: the stage of generation and the stage of completion. That itself is also completely expressed as the five stages. From the root tantra of the Glorious Guhyasamaja: With the body focusing on the mantra, with speech stimulating the mind, offering excellently, the desired accomplishment is achieved, the mind is joyful and content. Thus it is said. The yoga of remembering the Buddha, contemplating by remembering the Dharma, the yoga of remembering the Vajra, contemplating body, speech, and mind. 5-137 The yoga of remembering the lineage, contemplating by remembering the wrathful ones, the yoga of remembering the vows, if practiced, enlightenment will be attained. The meaning of what is said thus. The explanatory tantra Vajramala says: Through the excellent practice of Vajra recitation, having known the nature of the winds, cutting off the winds of conceptual thought, one will attain focus on the mind. Through the blessings on oneself in stages, one will also obtain the eight siddhis. Sna

Knowing the distinctions such as 'I' etc., attaining the stages of manifest enlightenment, abiding in the stage of union, this, which gathers all accomplishments, will be achieved in this very life. Thus it is said. Also, in the glorious Ocean of Dakinis it says: One's own body is equal to illusion, vajra recitation is its own nature, the treasure of perfect bodhicitta, beyond that there is no union. Thus, the five stages of the completion stage itself are taught. In the later tantra of the Wheel of Time, there is also a prophecy that Nagarjuna will clarify the meaning of Guhyasamaja: Briefly, the attainment of object and subject through the false stages of transformation is vajra recitation. By self-blessing, the life-force in the one with the rabbit (moon), here in the fourth, one desires manifest enlightenment. Here, the fifth stage of union is supreme, and in the glorious Guhyasamaja, in order to truly subdue the demons, the lord of the three realms teaches the stages of the arising of the deities. Thus, without enumerating the unsurpassed intentions, briefly, the five added texts are prophesied. However, if this path of Guhyasamaja is condensed into five stages, then in the Lamp that Gathers Practices it says: The suchness of mantra, the suchness of mudra, the suchness of self, the suchness of dharma, and the suchness of deity. In order to make the five stages very clear, one should mix and explain sutras, tantras, and vikalpas. As it is said, those five in order are the stage of vajra recitation, the stage of focusing on the mind, the stage of self-blessing, the stage of manifest enlightenment, and the stage of non-abiding nirvana, these are the five. Here, the text of the stage of focusing on the mind is the unsurpassed intention. Furthermore, the stage of vajra recitation is only a preliminary for focusing on the mind, and the actual completion stage of the basis is focusing on the mind. Considering that vajra recitation is included as a limb of that, therefore the completion stage has four stages, and adding the initial generation stage, the five stages that combine both generation and completion are, as Chandrakirti says in the Clear Lamp: Thus it is said, the secret mantra body is extremely accomplished, the generation stage is the first, and merely focusing on the mind is said to be the second stage.
