Having freed oneself from the two non-meritorious deeds, one will attain the state of the Bhagavan Vajrasattva in this very life. Therefore, when establishing the nature of the ultimate clear light, this section of summarizing the meaning is extremely important. Furthermore, the reason why the classifications such as the clear light of sleep are not clearly explained in this treatise on the Five Stages is because they abide within the way the basis of appearance dissolves into the arising of appearance, as stated in "When one does all other things, all abide in the basis of emptiness," and "the aspect of night appearance," etc. In the third stage, it is understood by analogy through statements such as, "That itself becomes a gandharva being." However, a clear and extensive explanation can be understood from the Compendium of Conduct by Āryadeva. In that Compendium of Conduct, it is said: As long as the lump of aggregates exists, the nature of the three consciousnesses, that is, the appearance of self-nature, will appear to oneself and others. How does it appear? First, it is appearance. Second, it is self-nature. That which revolves in the ten directions with the wind, what is the reason for that? Because of desire, non-desire, intermediate desire, etc., and also fierce, peaceful, joyful, sorrowful, hunger, thirst, and feelings, etc., one hundred and sixty self-natures are remembered day and night, and ignorance naturally ceases. Again, rising up, due to the power of the wind, it turns from samsara to samsara. Therefore, having washed the body, as long as the senses such as the eyes focus on their objects, one will continue to focus on them, because one has been accustomed to it since beginningless time. Then, through habituation from one life to the next, having understood the yoga of mixing by learning the dharma of selflessness, one should merge the appearance of self-nature into one. Through this sequence, one should focus on the ultimate truth. The sequence is this: the aggregates, etc., are absorbed into the subtle elements, the subtle elements are absorbed into the mind, the mind is absorbed into the mental factors, and the mental factors are absorbed into ignorance. Having combined them in this way, one falls asleep. At this time, the mind and
