Since karma and suffering are not under one's own control, all occurrences such as birth and death happen involuntarily. It is not the case that birth and so on occur in a way that one can achieve whatever one thinks, in a self-determined manner. The cause of the occurrence of birth and death is the mind of clear light together with wind. Other things that belong to the mind of clear light also arise from the fourth clear light, the wisdom of emptiness, together with the wind that has become its mount. Here, the term "clear light" refers to all four appearances. "Clear light, all empty" means that the root of the other three appearances is also all empty. Therefore, calling the fourth appearance and the fourth emptiness "clear light" is to apply a general term to a specific one for the sake of the main meaning. Generally speaking, the wisdom of the three appearances also belongs to clear light. Otherwise, if one insists that the cause is clear light, and that clear light is all empty, then there would be a fault of repeating the word "clear light" twice. Furthermore, if one explains that the cause is clear light, and that within clear light, there is also all empty, then it would imply that there are many clear lights that are not all empty, which would make the meaning almost the same as the ordinary explanation. Therefore, one should not think it is wrong that in some instructions that possess the eighth experience, the term "clear light" is also applied to the three appearances. Therefore, what is the basis of all samsara and nirvana is the ultimate mind of clear light together with the ultimate wind. Among them, the mind of clear light, which is encompassed by the actual wisdom, is the great bliss of self-nature, unpolluted by all elaborations and signs. What, then, is the nature of this clear light's wind? Although great bliss itself does not appear from the relative, the self-power of great bliss itself, the ultimate wisdom, constantly appears in all forms, and that is the ultimate wind, and also the Vajra Body. Merely in terms of nomenclature, the ultimate wind and mind are established as body and mind, and are also called mount and rider, but in reality, they are the union of one essence. Such clear light, all empty, is the body, speech, and

Because it is the indivisible self-nature, it is also the manifestation, increase, and attainment of the Dharma-nature. Although it is only what is to be attained and realized, from its own perspective, it is always free from the three aspects of agent, object, and action. Although from its own perspective there is no arising or ceasing, it appears to be arising and ceasing in the minds of ordinary beings or yogis. Because of this reason, the fundamental clear light wind-mind, which is held by the alaya-consciousness and exists in it as a sudden stain, arises. That is to say, the pure conventional consciousness, whose self-nature is not changed by external objects, and any appearance held by the three aspects of body, speech, and mind, or the three aspects of place, meaning, and body, can manifest once it encounters conditions. The state of clear awareness that possesses all forms and is in accordance with them, and is unceasing, is the same in meaning as the alaya-consciousness. It is the clear light mind that is the cause of all the laws of samsara and the path. The mere awareness itself is not a habit from its own perspective, so it is called pure. However, there is no part of this awareness that is not pervaded by habits. Because its habits are not unique, all habits are mixed and gathered, and thus pervade it. This is the mind in relation to itself. The power of habit, in the manner of images appearing, causes the mind to move in various external objects, and awareness also arises accordingly. The external objects that become the manifestation of these awarenesses also have the ability to increase and have the nature of moving in external objects. This is coarser than the previous pure mind and is the creator of forms. Therefore, it is the seed of the body and the dharma of the body. In relation to this meaning, because it moves, it is also established as the dharma of wind. Therefore, the clear light mind and the wind that becomes its support are what are referred to here, and it is also the root of samsara. Because the names of "I" or "self" are also established here, it is said that samsara arises from one's own mind and not from elsewhere. The six realms of beings having autonomy without autonomy is the clear light, and these two have the same meaning. The clear light that becomes the alaya-consciousness is also empty of everything in the same way, and is only to be called wisdom. This is the light of the base time.
