The wind that generates the conceptual thoughts of anger, separate from the earth, although it is a distinct type of wind. If that type of wind is imbued with the scent of roots and stems, it generates anger when awake. Another type, if imbued with the power of a single entity, generates anger in dreams, like that. Since the two roots and day and night are skillful means and wisdom, it is reasonable to distinguish them by the difference of skillful means and wisdom. However, it is not good to apply the recognition of skillful means and wisdom, the universally known conventional truth and ultimate truth, to this. In the case of the nature of appearance, the main one is anger. In the case of the nature of proliferation, the main ones are desire, pride, and view. In the case of the nature of attainment, the main ones are ignorance and doubt. The others are like retinues. Therefore, it is similar to explaining the root of existence as six subtle increases. These are the roots of samsara that perform the actions of propelling and accomplishing, but their nature is emptiness, bliss, and luminosity. If one dissolves into luminosity in this way of realization, it is also the supreme means of liberation. Therefore, the root of entering and returning in samsara is the three appearances. The chief of the thirty-three thoughts of appearance is detachment, that is, anger, and since there are many conceptual thoughts that are in accordance with it, it is mentioned by the name of the chief, that is, the thirty-three that arise from anger. Among the forty thoughts of proliferation, desire is the chief, and since there are many that are in accordance with it, they are called the forty thoughts of desire. Among the seven thoughts of attainment, ignorance is the chief, and since there are many that are in accordance with it, they are similarly called the seven thoughts of delusion. It is well known to the instruction manuals that it is not unreasonable to mention the chief. In general, wherever one of the three poisons exists, all exist there, so each category is also mixed with all three. Apart from the distinction of major and minor, wherever one of the three appearances exists, all exist there. The reason for making them three is to establish the secrets of body, speech, and mind. Otherwise, from the purification of the four vajras, four appearances arise, from the purification of the five wisdoms, five appearances arise, from the purification of the six lineages, six appearances arise, and so on, from a hundred lineages to the infinite. However, all the classifications are one doctrine.

Since there is no need to summarize, it has not been clearly distinguished for the time being. These thoughts, whether similar or dissimilar, continuously flow without certainty. However, each thought arises, stays, and vanishes in a very short time, such as a kshana, a snap of the fingers, a moment, a blink of an eye, a clap of the hands, and so on. This is not analyzed by the wisdom that investigates the essence of things, because if analyzed in that way, even a moment's duration cannot be found. Therefore, just as it is said that the length of a day is thirty hours, and the length of a burning candle can last the whole night, here the duration of each thought is being described. If similar thoughts do not follow one another, there is only one kshana; even if similar thoughts follow one another, each thought does not exceed that time. However, because many thoughts gather together, they are mistaken for one thought, so it is perceived as a long time. Furthermore, if ten different thoughts arise in ten kshanas, because they are very subtle, ordinary people cannot distinguish the boundaries, and because they are all mixed together, they cannot even perceive the arising of thoughts. However, those yogis who have trained on the path can perceive them as they are, and can also understand that each thought has the movement of three appearances. Among them, a kshana is described as the duration of the sound of striking a cymbal. A snap of the fingers is the time it takes to roll a mustard seed, that is, the time it takes for the mustard seed to change direction. A moment is the time of one breath. A blink of an eye is the time it takes for the eyelids to close when blinking. A clap of the hands is the duration of the sound of two hands clapping together. These are the definitions of the length of time of kshana and so on. In the Explanatory Tantra Vajra Garland it says: "In the six times of exhaling and inhaling, it is known as root and flesh. Six kshanas are one breath, which is also the measure of the sound of striking a cymbal. Three finger snaps are one kshana, which is the time of rolling a mustard seed. Three breaths are one finger snap, a finger snap is a moment. Three finger snaps are one blink of an eye, that is also the time of closing the eyes. Three 'tams' are one blink of an eye, 'tam' is a clap of the hands. Those three 'tams' when bliss arises." Therefore, kshana, the sound of striking a cymbal, and blinking are the same in meaning, while finger snap, rolling a mustard seed, the 'tam' of closing the eyes, clapping, a moment, and a subtle breath are the same in meaning.
