The hands of the Buddha and the gods on the ground, having taken from all the pure lands, anoint his head, as a sign of truly following. After saying this, those who are led by signs will turn into paths of heretics or lesser vehicles. The meditation of the Mahayana is something without any appearance, those who think and say this are wrong. To them it is said: You have neither understood the meaning of the sutras, nor have you seen the explanations of those sutras by the wise, and it seems that you have not distinguished the differences between these and those. The intention of those sutra words is: contemplating the impermanence of conditioned phenomena and the samadhi of impurity, etc., is the antidote to the four inversions of ordinary beings, which is the conduct of children; separately discerning by understanding and analyzing the two meanings of selflessness is the discrimination of dharma; obtaining clear appearance of suchness in the path of joining and above is the object of suchness; the samadhi of the Buddhas is always in accordance with virtue, and the equipoise of those who directly see suchness is always free from defilement, which is called the Tathagata's virtuous contemplation. Through familiarity with these, many images of the objects of meditation, such as the shapes of the sun and moon, will appear. Furthermore, the appearance like the light of copper described in the third ground is also similar to these, so it does not mean that relying on those signs will lead astray into the paths of heretics and lesser vehicles, but rather that in the state of the first three meditations such as the conduct of children, those visible signs will appear, as well as the common four meditations and four formless meditations similar to heretics, and the boundless samadhi of experience in accordance with the doctrines of heretics. The Tathagata's virtuous contemplation, although generally present in all Mahayana noble ones, when practicing it in the impure seven grounds, these visible signs will also appear, as well as the experiences of samadhi such as subtle self-interest attention similar to the paths of hearers and solitary realizers. These experiences are also conventional appearances, and are part of the illusion related to the previous conceptualizations of signs.
