Just as there is a seed inside the earth, but it is not visible, so it is called essence. The universal Dharma nature is the Tathagata. It exists but is not visible, so it is essence. Therefore, you have the Tathagatagarbha. You are the one who possesses the Tathagatagarbha. How is that so? Because all the container and contents of the world that appear to you, and all your body, speech, and enjoyment, seem to be the manifestation of your consciousness. All of this is contained in your own consciousness. There is nothing other than consciousness. And consciousness, various thoughts and discriminations, are also just the radiance of this clear and aware mind. It is like an image appearing on water. This clear and aware mind is the Alaya consciousness. The early lamas called it indestructible ignorance. It exists in the nature of the habit of leaking pleasure. If you know how to look inward, then even foolish people can experience this now. It is visible. Self-awareness is the conventional truth. This is also the way it appears, but it is not the reality. The continuous awareness appears nakedly, but it is not real as it appears, but an illusion. Where this exists, that is where the Buddha of the Dharmadhatu is present. That is the reality of this mind, the way of dwelling, the nature, the self-image. This present mind is not the nature of the mind, not the reality. The nature and reality of this mind is the Tathagatagarbha. The perfect Buddha knows this as it is. The tenth-ground Bodhisattva sees it clearly. The eighth and ninth-ground Bodhisattvas only see it roughly. Those who dwell on the impure seventh ground only see a corner of it. Hearers, solitary realizers, and ordinary Bodhisattvas without the profound secret mantra methods can only understand it through faith, but cannot actually see it. Ordinary common people cannot even understand it through faith. Even the great scholars among the Panditas, such as Buddhapalita, Sthiramati, Chandrakirti, Jnanagarbha, and Shantarakshita, etc., if they do not have the merit to understand this Dharma through faith, then for those Tibetan preachers, Tibetan meditators, those who eat, drink, and have fun, and those who are famous, and those who accomplish activities with the evil spirits of black karma, how can they generate faith in this Dharma? Not to mention understanding it. Even
