Older than oneself, the young are younger than oneself, if there is one who is of similar age to oneself, one is not equal in strength with the older and younger ones, and it is uncomfortable to play arm wrestling and so on, it is easy to get along with someone of similar age because they are equal in strength, just like playing and having fun, the past is already past, and it is useless to regret it. Future desires and expectations are uncertain, and it is useless to expect them, and placing hope on the two will only lead to mental confusion. Therefore, it is comfortable to abide without acceptance or rejection in whatever appearance arises now, so it is said. The so-called "effortless yoga" is to relax while tightening, which is diligence, but after relaxing, one abides in effortlessness. As the great Brahmin said, "The mind that is bound by ropes, if loosened, will be liberated without a doubt." The Chöpa practitioners say, "Tighten with the law and loosen with relaxation, the method of abiding of the mind is there." Therefore, this is also called the instruction of relaxation and self-liberation. In general, specifically tightening, specifically relaxing, alternating tightening and relaxing, and neither tightening nor relaxing, these four key points, depending on the situation, are only special methods to bring out the best in what is appropriate. As for the nature of reality, none of these are tainted. Some people, with a good clinging to not accepting or rejecting, not negating or establishing, will eventually fall into a state of unity of acceptance and rejection, contradicting themselves, falling into gods and demons, and medicine turning into poison. For example, in the biography of the great Drikungpa, I practiced the Mahamudra of the Sarahā (Sanskrit: Sarahā) lineage, which is to relax awareness. The lama said, "What is there to relax in Mahamudra?" It is said that this is a very good instruction. For a disciple who is easy to accept, when practicing with the physical key points, Zhang Tsalpa said, "Even if you do this, it is still Mahamudra." He repeatedly said this and made various gestures. It is said that this is the key to the instruction, and it was necessary to say that to that person at that time. For general practice, the key alone is not enough, especially if one promises not to accept or reject, not to negate or establish, one will eventually fall on top of negation and establishment, on Mahamudra.

The thought of relaxation should be cut off. What else should not be relaxed? Excessive relaxation should be prohibited. What needs to be cultivated without relaxation is precisely abandonment, acceptance, prohibition, and cultivation. Furthermore, bending the body should be prohibited, and cultivating an unfixed posture is precisely abandonment, acceptance, prohibition, and cultivation. Saying that there is no need for relaxation, and that if one relaxes there is no doubt of liberation, is this not contradictory to what was said before? Similarly, most practitioners prohibit artificiality and cultivate the unadorned natural state. However, this very prohibition and cultivation is artificial, becoming contrived and tainted. Also, 4-280 Some who desire to attain profound meditation say that maintaining the unadorned natural state is also an action, an attachment. For me, there is neither artificiality nor non-artificiality. There is no difference between the natural state and action. While saying this, they weave lies. Attachment to the unadorned natural state is precisely the sign of distinguishing between good and bad, thus words and meaning are inconsistent, and understanding and experience do not match. Enough with the digression. For example, the analogy of "a wild ass that is tied and then released" is as follows: Once, a herdsman tied a wild ass to a stake. Because it was bound, the wild ass felt uncomfortable and could only stand, lie down, and move restlessly back and forth. It neither ate grass nor slept. Later, the herdsman untied the stake and released the wild ass. The wild ass ran for a while, and realizing that it was free, the previous feeling of constraint disappeared, and it felt relaxed and at ease, so it lay down with its companions. The herdsman said to his wife, "When tied, it strives to run in all directions; when released, it stays there without moving. Dear, the wild ass that I see appears completely reversed to me." It is said that he spoke like this. Based on this story, the great accomplished one (Marpa Lotsawa) said, "When bound, one strives to run in all directions; once released, one abides steadily without moving. I understand this to be like a wild ass with reversed understanding. Children, you should also reflect greatly on yourselves." Each of these four objects of focus should be repeatedly cultivated until experience arises. Afterwards, condense these four key points into one and cultivate in the usual way. Furthermore, in the tantras and commentaries on mind, apart from the distinction between day and night yoga, there is no other object of focus, only one of gathering. Almost all other instructions on the six yogas are the same. These four appeared in the close lineage instructions of Vībhūticandra. If one thinks that this contradicts the tantric scriptures, it does not, because these four objects of focus are in accordance with the tantric commentaries.
