Furthermore, the lineage lamas are mentioned only to remember their kindness and as part of the root guru's retinue. If one specifically relies on and practices with dakinis and dharma protectors, it is also important here. Others (protectors) can be included in the Sangha, so it is not absolutely certain. In general, the visualization and practice of refuge in the Mantrayana tradition has various methods, such as gathering all refuge objects in one large mandala, and gathering them in a single lama, so there is no fixed order for the visualization. The status is as previously stated. The second point, the reason why one must take refuge is: For fears of this life such as enemies, demons, and diseases, just as one strives to seek refuge to be freed from those fears. We beings in this place of samsara have countless kinds of fears in all stages of this life, the next life, and the bardo. There is no opportunity to eliminate these fears by our own power. Therefore, it is necessary to seek a refuge that can free us from these fears. However, none of the worldly parents and relatives, the superiors above, the servants below, or friends who are directly equal to oneself have the ability to protect. As it is said, "Although I lie in bed, surrounded by relatives and friends, the suffering of death is experienced by me alone." Like this, they have not even seen or heard of death, so what help can they be? They cannot protect even in this life, and are more harmful than beneficial. Moreover, those who are said to be great gods, such as Vishnu and Shiva, and those who have great magical powers, such as the universal monarch, may be able to protect against a little harm in this life, but there are also many things they cannot protect against. They may occasionally seem to save one or two lifetimes from the lower realms by slightly indicating the acceptance and rejection of karmic results, but most of the time, the places of acceptance and rejection are also reversed, so they cannot save from the lower realms even temporarily. In particular, they never have the ability to liberate from samsara, because they themselves have not been liberated from samsara, but wander in samsara, their minds disturbed by afflictions.

Because one has not received empowerment. Therefore, the Three Jewels can protect from all the sufferings of the three realms of samsara: this life, the next life, and the intermediate state. Since no one other than the Three Jewels can protect from the sufferings of samsara, one must take refuge in the Three Jewels. The third point is how to protect: The Buddha is the teacher, the one who teaches what to adopt and abandon when one does not know. The Dharma is the actual refuge, the adoption and abandonment taught by the Buddha is the Dharma. Therefore, by putting into practice what comes from within the Dharma, one is freed from all fears and attains all happiness. The Sangha is the companion, like seeking a guide when traveling on an unfamiliar path. For example, one must go where the guide goes, and one must do whatever they do. This is based on the assumption that one has directly met the noble ones, but if there is a lineage of oral instructions and practices passed down from one noble being to another, then one can also rely on the pure Sangha of ordinary beings. This is more important in this day and age. For secret mantra practitioners, the lama is the teacher, and the lama is also the guide. Furthermore, the Buddha possesses infinite wisdom, compassion, and power. With wisdom, he knows all the methods to protect all sentient beings who have taken refuge from fear and suffering. With compassion, he does not remain indifferent to the benefit of sentient beings, but constantly protects them. With power, he can also protect according to their capacity. Therefore, the Buddha can protect. The noble Sangha is similar in direction, except for the difference in the degree of greatness, because they possess special wisdom, compassion, and power, they are worthy of refuge and will protect. The main way of protecting is to practice according to the sacred Dharma spoken by the Buddha and the Sangha, so that when the cause of afflictions is abandoned, one is freed from all the results of suffering and fear. Another way of protecting is not only dependent on abandoning the cause of fear and suffering, but also by merely reciting the name, prostrating, and praying, one can...
