When meditating on the object of focus, one should not discriminate, But rather expand widely to generate great faith. As it says in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "Until the essence is reached." Thus, the explanation of taking refuge until Buddhahood is attained Refers to the common aspect of the three objects of refuge mentioned in this way. Because the Buddha Jewel is the ultimate refuge, There is no limitation of "until Buddhahood is attained" for the Buddha himself. Therefore, the ultimate refuge is, Only the Buddha. As it says in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "In the supreme sense, the refuge to go to, only the Buddha is the refuge." Thus. The ultimate Dharma and the ultimate Sangha are also the Buddha himself. Therefore it is said: "The Guide has the Dharmakāya, and the Sangha is also his ultimate." Thus. Also, as it is said: The inexhaustible refuge, the permanent refuge, the indestructible refuge, the supreme refuge is one, Namely, the Tathāgata, Arhat, perfectly complete Buddha. The noble Asanga said so. Therefore, those objects of refuge that are not the Buddha, for those who have attained Buddhahood, will not become objects of refuge. Therefore, they are temporary or provisional objects of refuge. The Buddha Jewel is different from those, For those who have gone for refuge, until they attain Buddhahood, It is only under the protection of the Buddha, and in a state of being sheltered by his shadow. Once Buddhahood is attained, One is separated from all fears, and transforms into a state of even greater fusion than the desire for the object of refuge itself. There will never be separation, nor mutual abandonment. Therefore, because one constantly does not abandon the refuge, it is called the ultimate refuge. Therefore, this saying of "until Buddhahood is attained," That after attaining Buddhahood there is no need for reliance, etc., is something that flows from the mouths of fools, And there is no reason to trust it at all. Reliance, there is none for any of the great vehicle's noble ones, Because for those who directly realize emptiness, desire does not arise. Because one travels the grounds and paths effortlessly by one's own power, There is no need to rely on others. Abandoning other refuges after attaining Buddhahood, That is going to self-abandonment, how could it be abandoning after despising them? Regarding the ultimate refuge, until space is not...

Until samsara is not empty, or forever, constantly taking refuge, it is said like that, there is no fixed time limit. Furthermore, if explained extensively, it can be explained by quoting from Ornament of Clear Realization and Uttaratantra Shastra, etc. According to the unique Vajrayana of secret mantra, one must take refuge in both the general Three Jewels and the special objects of refuge, the guru, yidam, and dakini. Therefore, here, the explanation of the six refuges is made. If one thinks that refuge other than the Three Jewels is not reasonable, that is not the case. The yidam deity assembly is a component of the Buddha Jewel. The wisdom dakinis and dharma protectors are components of the Sangha Jewel. One does not take refuge in worldly deities. The guru is the essence of all three jewels. If one thinks that three is enough, why do we need six refuges? Although it is not beyond the three jewels, there are other special necessities. What are those like? Because in this secret mantra, the blessings of the object from which one directly receives blessings must be integrated, and one must remember the kindness, so one takes refuge in the guru separately. And, because it is the unique object for requesting common and supreme accomplishments, one takes refuge in the yidam mandala. In order to eliminate obstacles and accomplish temporary wishes, one must seek activities, so one takes refuge in dharma protectors, etc., and one emphasizes them in a very important way, so one takes refuge. Those who do the four refuges are doing so in terms of not highlighting the role of the yidam and dharma protectors; otherwise, it is the same. The root guru is the collection of all places of refuge, as stated in the Vinayasamucchaya: "The guru is the Buddha, the guru is the Dharma, similarly, the guru is the Sangha, the guru is the glorious Vajradhara." And in the Kalachakra Tantra, the king of tantras, it says: "The teacher is the Buddha himself, the most supreme on the earth, the Dharma is taught by him. Wherever the Sangha dwells, possessing a heart of great joy, always cherishing love for all sentient beings." And so on, extensively explained. Therefore, those who enter the gate of mantra must place the root guru and yidam above all other places of refuge.
