The babbling of the three poisons of ignorance increases. The Dharma declines for all monastics and laity. Attachment grows, hatred increases, and jealousy blazes. There is little respect for anyone, and evil is done without shame. If this continues, it is simply demonic, even worse than demons. Although demons obstruct the Dharma, they also seem to offer some help in worldly matters. But in another situation, there is only suffering in this life and the next. One suffers oneself, and others suffer as well. There is suffering in this life, and suffering in the next. Furthermore, there is a group of monastics and laity without merit and whose karma is not exhausted, and they also need to be taught. Tsangpa Gyarepa said, "A student with bad karma is deeply sinful. He does not rely on a qualified lama, but follows those who offer wealth and possessions. Meeting a deceiver, his heart feels satisfied." This is what it is like. In the past, the Tibetan king and his retinue, who had accumulated great sins, invited Abbot Bodhisattva and began to perform virtuous deeds. They showed great respect to the Three Jewels. Even when invading other places such as China, they did not harm temples or monks. Moreover, all who sought refuge were protected, and those who could not come would prostrate and make offerings from afar. Look at the history of Li Yul (present-day Hotan area in Xinjiang). When King Trisong Detsen and his subjects heard the Prajnaparamita in One Hundred Thousand Verses and other scriptures, great wisdom arose in each of them, corresponding to their own intelligence. The king wrote commentaries on the One Hundred Thousand Verses, as well as many excellent treatises such as the Tshad ma yang dag pa'i tshad ma (Valid Cognition: A Presentation of the Proofs). Such is the benefit of relying on holy beings. Abbot Bodhisattva did not arrange a marriage between the Tibetan king and the Indian king, nor did he help with military strategy through political alliances. One cannot take refuge in someone who is unrelated to the Dharma, simply because of their great kindness. Although the kindness of parents is great, they cannot be counted among the holy beings. Either protect the father's religion or protect the mother's religion. If one has no Dharma, what religion does one protect? Close relatives are not true relatives, so how can they become of the lineage of a lama? The essence of the meaning is the noble Avalokiteśvara's...

It is said in the scriptures: The wise respect qualities, not Buddhas, Ishvara, etc. If one respects those without qualities, it is born from foolish and unwholesome actions. Thus it is said, all virtuous people should contemplate well. It is also said: The source of all good paths is none other than the excellent Dharma. All eighty-four thousand teachings rely on secret mantras. The root of mantras is devotion and faith in the guru. Devotion and faith must be without hypocrisy, and one must truly recognize its necessity. Not to mention worldly people, even practitioners nowadays find it difficult. However, it is inevitable not to contradict the root guru's instructions and not to displease the guru. It is not enough for me to think that I have not accumulated sins against the guru. If one does not have faith in the root guru but becomes close to another person, it is said that one's vows will be broken. Not entrusting external affairs to the root guru and not revealing internal affairs to others is itself hypocrisy and a breach of vows. Therefore, one must examine before relying on a guru in the first place. What kind of guru is needed? The characteristics of a guru are mentioned countless times in the sutras and tantras, how can they all be written here? Nowadays, if one makes one's own decisions, everything must be based on having a lineage. If one takes the vows of a fully ordained monk of individual liberation, one must not violate the four root vows. Furthermore, one must not commit notorious sins, one's conduct in the present few days must be good, one needs a rough understanding of the Vinaya, and one must be skilled in rituals. The guru for generating bodhicitta should be gentle in nature, have a rough understanding of the Mahayana, not commit notorious sins, and be skilled in rituals. If one wants to receive tantric teachings, one must not break the vows with the guru and fellow practitioners, have faith in the yidam deity, have some blessings from accomplishment of recitation etc., have a rough understanding of tantra, and be skilled in rituals, and one must not be a great evildoer. Regardless of lineage, that kind of guru is sufficient for ordinary people. For great people such as kings, in addition to those qualities, it is said in the tantras: A householder who has not attained the bhumis should not be made the guru by a king. And, those who consecrate temples etc., should always be done by those with signs. If three reside in one place, a householder vajra holder is not suitable. Unless they are realized beings with manifest signs.
