The Blessed One said, 'Even those who have broken the four root downfalls, hold wrong views, slander the extensive sutras, and commit the five heinous crimes, possess the Tathagatagarbha (如來藏, tathāgatagarbha, tathāgatagarbha, 如来之藏)。 Although they do not have virtuous qualities, the Tathagatagarbha is virtuous.' Furthermore, 'Son of noble family, in this sutra, I have said that the Tathagatagarbha possesses six qualities: permanence, truth, reality, virtue, purity, and visibility.' etc. Therefore, the Tathagatagarbha is established as virtuous. Since there is a difference between the unlabelled and the virtuous, they cannot be the same. Sixth, in the Sutra on No Increase No Decrease, it says, 'Shariputra, what is called 'ultimate meaning' is a synonym for the realm of sentient beings. Shariputra, what is called 'the realm of sentient beings' is a synonym for the Tathagatagarbha. Shariputra, what is called 'the Tathagatagarbha' is a synonym for the Dharmakaya.' Also, in the Uttaratantra (《宝性论》), it says, 'Because that is the Dharmakaya, that is the Tathagata, that is the truth of the noble ones, the ultimate Nirvana.' Therefore, the Tathagatagarbha is established as the ultimate truth. Whereas the Alaya-vijnana (阿赖耶识), since it is the root conceptualization, the incorrect conceptualization, the dependent origination, and one of the eight consciousnesses, is established as the conventional truth. Therefore, they cannot be the same. Seventh, in the Uttaratantra, it says, 'The nature of mind is luminosity, which is unchanging like space. Afflictions such as desire and hatred, arising from incorrect cognition, do not defile it.' And, 'Luminosity is uncreated and undifferentiated, possessing all the qualities of the Buddhas, more numerous than the grains of sand in the Ganges.' Also, in the Praise to the Dharmadhatu, it says, 'The stainless sun and moon are obscured by five obscurations: clouds, mist, smoke, the face of Rahu, and dust. Similarly, the luminous mind is obscured by five obscurations: desire, malice, laziness, agitation, and doubt.' etc. Therefore, the Tathagatagarbha is established as luminous. Whereas the Alaya-vijnana is conceptualization, therefore it is ignorance, therefore it is non-enlightenment. Therefore, it is non-luminous, and since it is consciousness, it is darkness. Since there is a difference between luminosity and darkness, they cannot be the same.' Also, in the Ornament of the Sutras --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'The nature of mind is always inherently luminous, but it is obscured by adventitious defilements. Other than the mind of suchness, there is no other mind; luminosity does not refer to inherent nature.' And in its commentary, it is said: 'The nature of mind is inherently luminous, but it is obscured by adventitious defilements. Other than the mind of suchness, there is no other mind; the characteristic of other dependent phenomena cannot be called inherent luminosity.' Eighth, furthermore, in many pure Mahāyāna sutras and treatises, the Tathāgatagarbha (Essence of the Thus-Gone One) itself is referred to by many terms such as Dharmakāya (Body of Dharma), Svabhāvikakāya (Body of Essence), Tathātā (Suchness), Bhūtakoti (Limit of Reality), Animitta (Signless), Dharmadhātu (Realm of Dharma), Śuddha-ātman (Pure Self), Pariniṣpanna (Perfectly Accomplished), Nitya (Permanent), Dhruva (Stable), Śāśvata (Eternal), Anāsravadhātu (Realm Without Defilements), Avipariṇāma (Non-changing), Śiva (Pure), Sukha (Bliss), Buddha (Buddha), Vimala-dhātu (Realm Without Stain), etc. The meanings expressed by these terms are not fully present in the Ālayavijñāna (Store-consciousness). However, the Ālayavijñāna is impermanent, unstable, non-eternal, impure, suffering, not completely pure, and subject to change, etc. Therefore, to say that these two are the same is to speak rashly without understanding the true nature of both the Tathāgatagarbha and the Ālayavijñāna. Refuting other wrong views arising from confusion of names. Third, clarifying the actual meaning of the scripture that is the basis of the confusion, in two parts: explaining how the scripture was spoken with a specific intention, and refuting the rebuttals to this. First part: Since there are countless faults in considering the Essence and the Store-consciousness to be the same, those statements in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra and the Ratnarāśi Sūtra that say they are the same should be understood as having a specific intention, because many other, more authoritative scriptures do not say this. Also, in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, it says: 'Mahāmati, what is the Pariniṣpanna-svabhāva (Perfected Nature)? It is the Thusness that is free from the discrimination of signs, names, and the characteristics of things, the wisdom of the Noble Ones attained by realizing the wisdom of self-awareness of each of the Noble Ones; this Perfected Nature of Mahāmati is the Essence of the Thus-Gone One.' It also says: 'Mahāmati, the teaching of the Essence of the Thus-Gone One by me is not the same as the self spoken of by the heretics; the Essence of the Thus-Gone One spoken of by the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
