Why is that? Because the Bhagavan said that the essence of the Tathagata (Tathagatagarbha) transcends the realm of conditioned phenomena (Saṃskṛta), being permanent, stable, and enduring. Therefore, by quoting scriptures that show its transcendence of conditioned phenomena, the Tathagatagarbha is thus established as unconditioned (Asaṃskṛta). Furthermore, the noble Asanga states in the Compendium on the Great Vehicle (Mahāyānasaṃgraha): 'Why is it called the Alaya-vijñana (Ālayavijñāna)? Because all arising, defiled dharmas are joined there as the substance of the fruit, or it also joins with them as the substance of the cause, therefore it is the Alaya-vijñana.' And, 'How are the Alaya-vijñana and all the defiled dharmas regarded as simultaneously becoming the cause of each other?' For example, the arising of a flame and the burning of the wick are simultaneous, and like a spear and a spear stand, they rely on each other and do not fall. Similarly, here too, they are regarded as simultaneously becoming the cause of each other. Just as the Alaya-vijñana is the cause of all defiled dharmas, similarly, all defiled dharmas are also established as the causal condition of the Alaya-vijñana, because no other causal condition is found.' Therefore, the Alaya-vijñana and all defiled dharmas are established as mutually cause and effect, thus being conditioned phenomena. So, since there is a difference between the unconditioned and the conditioned, they cannot be the same. Secondly, in the Dharani of Entering Non-Discrimination (Vikalparahita-dhāraṇī): 'Sons of good family, in order to understand this meaning, I will give an example: A hard rock, this is a term for the various defiled aspects of conditioned phenomena, and for those separately related to the two. The great treasure of the wish-fulfilling jewel (Cintamani) mentioned below is a term for the realm of non-discrimination (Nirvikalpa-dhātu). The person who desires the great treasure of the wish-fulfilling jewel is a term for the Bodhisattva-mahāsattva (Bodhisattva-mahāsattva). The person who realizes the great treasure is a term for the Tathagata (Tathagata), Arhat (Arhat), Samyaksaṃbuddha (Samyaksaṃbuddha). The rock is a term for the characteristics of self-nature discrimination. The carving is a term for non-attention. The stone vajra (vajra) that appears as silver is a term for the antidote. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Stone that appears as gold' is a term for conceptual marks regarding emptiness and so on. 'Stone that appears as various jewels' is a term for conceptual marks regarding attainment. 'Finding a great treasure of wish-fulfilling jewels' is a term for touching the realm of non-discrimination. 'Sons of lineage, in this way, by setting forth examples, one should comprehend entering the realm of non-discrimination.' As it is said, the Tathagatagarbha is established as non-discriminating. Furthermore, in the Compendium of Vehicles, it is said that there are ten types of discrimination, and the fundamental discrimination is the alaya-consciousness, which is said to be discrimination. Therefore, since there is a difference between non-discrimination and discrimination, it is impossible for them to be the same. Thirdly, in the root text and commentary of the Ornament of the Sutras, it says: 'Those appearing with three and three aspects, are the characteristics of the grasper and the grasped. The unreal imputation is the characteristic of other-dependence.' This has three and three appearing aspects, therefore it has three and three appearing aspects. Among them, the three appearances are: appearance as a place, appearance as a thing, and appearance as a body. Also, the three appearances are: appearance as mind, appearance as grasper, and appearance as discrimination; mind is that which is always afflicted. The grasper is the collection of the five consciousnesses. Discrimination is the consciousness of the mind. Among them, the first three appearances are the characteristics of the grasped. The second is the characteristic of the grasper, so the unreal imputation is the characteristic of other-dependence, so the alaya-consciousness is also named 'unreal imputation' and is said to be other-dependent. Also, in the same text, it says: 'The Suchness-object wisdom, completely abandoning dualistic grasping, the manifest body of bad rebirth, the wise one is said to exhaust that.' This shows how the nature of other-dependence is exhausted by fully knowing the three natures, that is, by focusing on Suchness, fully knowing the perfected nature; by completely abandoning dualistic grasping, fully knowing the imputed nature; and by fully knowing the other-dependent nature of the manifest body of bad rebirth, thus exhausting the body of bad rebirth, which is the alaya-consciousness. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
