A god, with his unobstructed divine eye, saw and gazed upon a golden disc, and then said to a man: 'Hey, go and see, in this place there is a precious piece of gold, covered by decay and filth, take it up and clean it, and use the gold to make gold ornaments, etc.' Noble sons, if we apply this metaphor to its meaning, then 'decay and filth' refers to the euphemism for the various defilements that obscure the essence, which is the name. 'The golden disc' refers to the nature of the Dharma that does not diminish or decay, which is the euphemism for the essence. 'The god's divine eye' refers to the euphemism for the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha. Noble sons, just as the god admonished the man to remove the filth covering the gold, so too, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, in order to remove the inherent Tathagatagarbha (Buddha-nature) of all sentient beings, which, although dwelling together with defilements, is not consumed by defilements, and the decay and filth that manifest as the three poisons of greed, hatred, and delusion, teaches the Dharma to sentient beings. Then, at that time, the Bhagavan (Blessed One) spoke these verses: 'Just as a man's golden disc, covered with various filth, falls into a dusty rag, and even if it remains there for ten years or more, that gold will not be destroyed or decayed. The god, seeing that gold with his divine eye, spoke to another man in order to purify it: 'In this filth there is precious gold, take it up, thoroughly remove the filth, and use that gold to make gold ornaments.' Similarly, I see all sentient beings constantly covered by defilements for a long time, and knowing that the temporary defilements of those sentient beings can be removed, in order to purify that unconditioned, independent Suchness (Tathata), I teach the Dharma to sentient beings by various means.' 5. The way the Sugata-garbha (Tathagatagarbha) resides in all beings like a treasure in the earth: Noble sons, again, for example, under the vault of the house of a poor man, there is buried a great treasure of wealth, that is, riches and gold...

For example, there is a large warehouse full of treasures, large enough to cover the height of seven people stacked on top of each other, covered by land. However, this great treasure would not say to the poor householder, 'Hey, man! I am a great treasure covered by land.' Why? Because this great treasure is essentially mind, possessing the collection of eight consciousnesses, it is not a sentient being, but an inanimate object, so it does not speak. That poor householder, driven by a mind of poverty, walks upon the treasure, and although the great treasure is under the land, he [does not see], his ears do not hear, his consciousness does not perceive, and his eyes do not see. Sons of good family, just like this analogy, all sentient beings, under the consciousness that clings to self, like a house; within the afflictions dominated by the ignorance of habits like land, there exists the Tathagatagarbha (如来藏,Tathāgatagarbha,Tathāgatagarbha,如来之藏), which is the great treasure of the ten genuine powers, the four fearlessnesses, the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, and all the Buddha-dharmas, and so forth. However, these sentient beings cling to the five desires of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, indulge in evil deeds, are tormented by the three sufferings, and wander in samsara. Because they have not heard the teaching of the Tathagatagarbha, they do not seek the means to obtain it, therefore it has not manifested, and they do not strive to purify the Tathagatagarbha completely. Sons of good family, then, the Tathagata appears in the world in a physical body, and within the assembly of Bodhisattvas, correctly reveals this great treasure of the Tathagatagarbha. Those assemblies also believe in this great treasure, practice the path like digging for gold, and for the sake of the teacher who reveals the Tathagatagarbha, therefore, the world should know that the Tathagata is an Arhat, a perfectly enlightened Buddha. With endless words of Dharma, like a great treasure, saying to sentient beings 'Unprecedented, unprecedented,' it is truly amazing! In a logical manner, using examples and arguments to prove, proclaiming the Dharma to be proven, is the benefactor of the treasury of the great treasure of Dharma, possessing unobstructed confidence, and endowed with the genuine ten powers and four fearlessnesses.
