If so, the Dharma taught by the Buddhas would become meaningless, and the efforts of the Bodhisattvas on the path would also become meaningless. Therefore, when Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas diligently engage in the work of purifying the essence and removing defilements, when they are completely liberated from all the bonds of afflictions and near afflictions, they obtain the essence with dual purity, thereby entering the ranks of those called Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksaṃbuddha, and perform all the deeds of the Tathāgata, such as turning the wheel of Dharma. Then, the Bhagavan, in order to express this meaning in song, spoke these four verses: 'Like a lotus, though it should be despised, its petals are closed, forming a bud, not yet open, in which there is the body of the Tathāgata, existing as the essence, not defiled by the evil petals. Some people with divine eyes, seeing with divine eyes, when that person opens the petals of the lotus, will directly see the body of the Victor in the center of the lotus. The body of the Victor will not be stained by defilements such as near afflictions, just as the bud of the lotus will not be stained by dirt. In this way, the body of the Victor becomes clearly visible in the world, without obscuration. Similarly, I, the Buddha, also dwell in the center of all beings, which is the Dharmakāya, the body of the Victors. Seeing that essence covered by countless billions of afflictions, like the bud of an evil lotus that should be despised. I always teach the Dharma to wise Bodhisattvas in order to have those beings remove afflictions, and after hearing these, these beings will also become Buddhas. Therefore, in order to generate Bodhicitta and obtain the essence of the Victor, one must purify afflictions. My Buddha-eye is like this, that eye is able to see all beings with essence dwelling in the body of the Victor. In order to purify the essence and defilements, I teach the Dharma.' Here, the word 'purify' is used for both essence and defilements, the meaning is: the essence is the basis of purification, so it is called 'purification', like washing a bottle. Defilement is the object of purification, so it is called 'purification', like washing away impurities. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As 'He' said, these treatises eliminate the view of some who consider the aggregates, etc., as the conventional objects to be purified, and also establish that even when the objects to be purified are exhausted, the basis of purification (referring to the aggregates, etc.) will not be exhausted. The way the Tathagatagarbha resides in all beings like the essence of honey in a honeycomb: Secondly, the way the Tathagatagarbha resides in all beings like the essence of honey in a honeycomb. Sons of the lineage, again, consider this example: Suppose there is a round honeycomb hanging on a tree branch, guarded by hundreds of thousands of bees, and filled with honey. Then, a person who desires honey skillfully drives away those bee-like creatures and uses the honey for medicine and other purposes. Sons of the lineage, just like that analogy, all sentient beings are like a honeycomb with honey, in which the very essence of the Tathagatagarbha is guarded and obscured by hundreds of thousands of afflictions and near afflictions, with the tendency of hatred as the chief one. The Tathagata sees this with unobstructed wisdom. Sons of the lineage, just as the honey in a honeycomb is guarded by hundreds of thousands of bees, and a wise person can discover it through discerning wisdom, so too, all sentient beings are guarded by hundreds of thousands of afflictions and near afflictions, and the Tathagatagarbha is obscured, which the Tathagata sees with the eye of wisdom. Sons of the lineage, the Tathagata, like someone skilled in using skillful means to drive away bees, removes the greed, hatred, and ignorance of beings, especially arrogance, pride, conceit about lineage, etc., as well as concealing faults, hiding misdeeds, or anger that causes suffering to oneself or others, and harmful thoughts such as killing others, jealousy that cannot tolerate the merits of others, and stinginess that is miserly towards the Dharma, etc., and other afflictions and near afflictions. Just as after clearing away the afflictions and near afflictions of sentient beings, they are no longer defiled by afflictions and are no longer harmed by afflictions, so too, the Tathagata teaches the Dharma to those who can be tamed. The Tathagata, with the eye of wisdom, sees the essence of the Tathagatagarbha purely, achieves twofold purity, and thereby performs the deeds of the Tathagata in the world. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
