and be able to show others twelve parts of one-sixteenth. If sentient beings generate the mind of enlightenment (bodhicitta) from Buddhas as numerous as the sands of seven Ganges rivers, then in the time of evil, they will not slander this Dharma, but will uphold, retain, recite, write it in books, and be able to show others fourteen parts of one-sixteenth. If sentient beings generate the mind of enlightenment from Buddhas as numerous as the sands of eight Ganges rivers, then in the time of evil, they will not slander this Dharma, but will uphold, retain, recite, and encourage others to write it in books, and they themselves will listen and retain it, and encourage others to listen, retain, recite, understand, and for the sake of compassion for the world, they will diligently protect and make offerings to the Sutras (mDo sDe), and encourage others to make offerings, serve, respect, prostrate, and recite, and so on. They will also fully understand the profound meaning, which is that the Tathāgata is of the nature of permanence, unchanging, ultimately blissful, and will extensively explain that sentient beings have the Buddha-nature (Buddha-dhātu). They will be very skilled in the treasury of the Tathāgata's Dharma, and after making offerings to those Buddhas, they will be able to uphold, retain, protect, distinguish, and realize these unsurpassed true Dharmas. If someone generates the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, then in the future they will also uphold, retain, and protect this true Dharma, and निश्चित (niścita, निश्चित) certainly be able to distinguish the true Dharma. Thus it is said. Seventh, in the Root Text and Commentary of the Uttaratantra (Gyü Bla rTsa 'Grel), it says: 'Since all of the supreme among the noble ones, abiding in the ultimate ground free from defilements, are not objects, and this realm (khams) is difficult to see, then what is the use of teaching this from the perspective of ordinary beings?' The necessity of teaching is summarized in two verses, one asking the question and the other giving the answer. 'Like clouds and dreams, flowing here and there, all knowable objects are empty in every way.' Since this has been said, why do the Buddhas say that sentient beings have the Tathāgatagarbha? It is to prevent the timid from being discouraged, from despising the inferior, and from abandoning the true Dharma. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Holding onto the correct Dharma while disparaging, possessing five faults such as attachment to self, these are spoken to abandon those faults.' And, 'The true limit is the separation from all conditioned phenomena. The meaning of afflictions, karma, and maturation is spoken of like clouds and so forth. Afflictions are like clouds, the karma of actions is like enjoyment in a dream. The meaning of the maturation of afflictive karma is that the aggregates are like illusion and emanation.' Having established it in this way before, again in this lineage of the Lama, it is taught that the essence exists in order to abandon the five faults. Thus, because it is not heard, due to the fault of despising oneself, some minds become disheartened, and Bodhicitta does not arise. For those in whom Bodhicitta has arisen, if they boast that they are superior, they strongly engage in the perception of inferiority towards those in whom Bodhicitta has not arisen. Thus, for that kind of mind, correct knowledge does not arise, therefore they grasp at what is incorrect and do not realize the true meaning. Because it is artificial and temporary, the faults of sentient beings are not true. The true fault is selflessness, and the qualities are naturally pure. Grasping at untrue faults and denigrating true qualities, wise people will not see themselves and sentient beings as equal and will not attain loving-kindness. From hearing this, from hearing, like joy and showing, respect and wisdom, Yeshe (Sanskrit: यशस्, Yaśas, fame) and great compassion arise. In order to generate the five qualities, from that, there is no fault, seeing all as equal, possessing faultless qualities, making oneself and sentient beings equal, one quickly attains Buddhahood. The meaning of this is that the Dharmadhatu is separated from all conditioned phenomena, considering that afflictions and so forth are non-existent like clouds and so forth, therefore it is taught that all is empty, like space. Then, in the final turning of the wheel, in order to abandon the five faults, the essence is clearly taught. The five faults are: because one has not heard of having essence, one does not generate Bodhicitta because one perceives oneself as inferior; those who have generated Bodhicitta, consider themselves superior and despise others; therefore, one grasps at untrue faults, such as pride, as true; one slanders the true nature of Dharma; and, because one possesses these two faults, one cannot generate loving-kindness towards sentient beings, seeing oneself and sentient beings as equal. If one hears of essence, one can abandon the five faults: one generates joy in practicing Bodhi for oneself; one respects other sentient beings like showing; the wisdom of not grasping at faults as true; the Yeshe of having faith in the nature of Dharma; and, one generates compassion towards sentient beings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
