Just as beings on earth hold loving-kindness that regards others as equal to oneself and generate five qualities, and by familiarizing themselves with these qualities, quickly attain enlightenment, this is the necessity of the Sugata-garbha (Tathāgatagarbha, 如来藏) being clearly taught in the final turning of the Dharma wheel. Therefore, one should not follow those who mistakenly think that the Sugata-garbha in the Uttaratantra (Ratnagotravibhāga, 宝性论) is taught as provisional meaning. Therefore, the words and meaning of teaching the essence. Second, the words and meaning have nine aspects: How the Sugata-garbha dwells in all beings like the body of the Victorious One in a lotus bud. First, how the Sugata-garbha dwells in all beings like the body of the Victorious One in a lotus bud: Having requested and listened respectfully, the Bhagavan (Blessed One) spoke thus: 'Sons of the lineage,' having called out, 'how is it that, for example, the lotus emanated by the Tathagata (如来), which is of poor color, foul-smelling, worthy of reproach, and not a source of joy, and the form of the Tathagata, beautiful with perfect proportions, excellent with form, marks, and signs, pleasing to the eye, captivating the mind, seated cross-legged in the heart of these lotuses, radiating hundreds of thousands of limitless rays, and being revered and worshipped by gods and humans who recognize them, in the same way, sons of the lineage, the Tathagata, Arhat (应供), Samyaksambuddha (正等觉), with his wisdom and knowledge, with the eye of the Tathagata Buddha, sees sentient beings who have become living beings, whose primary characteristic is the latent tendency of desire, whose defilement is attachment to objects, and who are afflicted by desire, hatred which is the wish to harm, ignorance which is the nature of unknowing, craving which is the desire for objects again and again, and ignorance, and so forth, all of whom are enveloped in the bud of six root afflictions and twenty secondary afflictions, and so forth, which are extremely numerous with eighty-four thousand distinctions. 'Sons of the lineage, within those sentient beings enveloped in the bud of afflictions, the Tathagata, the Dharmakaya (法身) whose essence is inseparable, possessing self-arisen wisdom like a mirror, is the Dharma-nature of many beings, and because he possesses all aspects, many Buddhas dwell there, seated cross-legged, always abiding in the unchanging realm, and therefore, without moving, he sees that all beings are afflicted by all afflictions such as attachment.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Among those beings who have transformed, the Dharmata of the Tathagata, the Buddha of Dharmata, is unmoving. Seeing all beings in samsara, whose coverings of affliction have been untainted from the beginning, the Tathagata says: 'The Tathagata dwells within beings, and they are no different from me (the Buddha).' Noble sons, the eyes of the Tathagata are so beautiful because they see that all beings possess essence. The eyes of the Tathagata see all beings as the Tathagatagarbha, those who possess essence. Noble sons, for example, a person with divine eyes, with his divine eye, looks at those lotuses that are unpleasant in color, foul in smell, not yet bloomed, and whose petals are not unfolded, and sees in the center of the lotus the Nirmāṇakāya of the Tathagata seated in the lotus posture. In order to see the body of the Tathagata, and in order to thoroughly purify the lotus petals that obscure the body of the Tathagata, he would open and remove those lotus petals that are unpleasant in color, foul in smell, and worthy of reproach. Similarly, noble sons, the Tathagata, with the Buddha's eye, sees all beings as the Tathagatagarbha, and in order to liberate this essence from defilement, in order to break apart the coverings of affliction of beings' attachment, hatred, delusion, craving, and ignorance, he teaches the Dharma of the Three Vehicles. The basis for establishing this Dharma wheel is the Tathagata existing in the continuum of beings, and they truly exist. Noble sons, this abiding essence is the Dharmata or Svabhava of all dharmas. Whether the Rupakaya of the Tathagata appears in the world or not, these beings are always endowed with the Tathagatagarbha. However, noble sons, the reason why beings wander in samsara is that they are covered by coverings of affliction that are worthy of reproach. In order to break apart the cause of their wandering, the coverings of affliction, and in order to completely purify the self-arisen wisdom of the Tathagata from defilement and attain purity, the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones, teach the Dharma to the Bodhisattvas, and they also delight in engaging in the activity of purifying the essence. If beings did not have essence, then the Buddhas would not generate such intense diligence for the sake of beings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
