'Radiant with light, the blind do not see.' Furthermore, in the *Mahaparinirvana Sutra*: 'Good son, for example, colors such as blue, yellow, red, and white, or long and short, are different, and although they have substance, the blind do not see them. Although they do not see them, it is not right to say that there are no differences such as blue, yellow, red, and white, nor is it right to say that there are no long or short shapes. Why is that? Although the blind do not see, those with eyes do see. The Buddha-nature is also like that; although sentient beings do not see it, Bodhisattvas on the ten bhumis see only a portion of it, while the Tathagatas see it completely. Bodhisattvas on the ten bhumis see the Buddha-nature as if seeing a form at night, while the Tathagatas see it as if seeing a form during the day.' Therefore, one should understand by examining the pure scriptures with pure wisdom; one cannot understand by reasoning and speculation alone without scriptural basis. Fourth, explaining the definitive meaning of emptiness. In the *Uttaratantra* and its commentary: 'What is the *Tathagatagarbha* (如来藏,Tathāgatagarbha,De-bzhin gshegs-pa'i snying-po, Essence of the Thus-Gone) that is spoken of as the nature of emptiness? In this, there is nothing to be removed, and there is nothing to be established. Seeing reality as it is, one is liberated upon seeing reality. The realm is empty of adventitious stains, which are characterized by distinctions; it is not empty of the unsurpassed Dharma, which is characterized by non-distinction.' What does this indicate? Because in this *Tathagatagarbha*, which is naturally completely pure, there is no cause of defilement to be removed, since being free from adventitious stains is its nature. In this, there is also nothing to be established as a cause of purification, since the nature of pure Dharma, which is without distinctions, is its nature. Therefore, the *Tathagatagarbha* is empty of all the sheaths of defilements that can be distinguished and separated, and it is not empty of the inconceivable Buddha-dharmas that cannot be distinguished or separated, which are more numerous than the sands of the Ganges.' Therefore, this statement shows that the *Tathagatagarbha* is empty of faults but not empty of qualities, thus establishing the emptiness of ultimate nature that is not empty of itself. Similarly, in the *Madhyantavibhaga*: 'The non-existence of entities in persons and dharmas is emptiness here.' This non-existence --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

‘The real that is without existence, that emptiness is other than that.’ Nāgārjuna said in the *Madhyamaka-bhāvanākrama* (Stages of Meditation on the Middle Way): ‘The emptiness of the unborn is one, one is the emptiness of the born. The emptiness of the unborn is supreme, the emptiness of the born is destructible.’ In the *Dharmadhātustava* (In Praise of the Dharmadhātu): ‘Emptiness is the essence of the teacher's instructions, whatever the Victorious Ones have spoken, all of that turns away afflictions, but that realm is not destroyed.’ Mañjuśrī, in a brief exposition of his own view, said: ‘The aggregates analyzed are all empty, like water and trees, they have no essence. Possessing all kinds of excellence, emptiness does not change in that way.’ From the *Yum* (Mother Sutra): ‘What is the emptiness of other entities? Whether the Tathāgatas appear or not, the abiding nature of phenomena, the nature of phenomena, the realm of phenomena, the faultless nature of phenomena, suchness, the non-erroneous suchness, the non-other suchness, the ultimate limit abides as such. Thus, whatever is empty of other entities among those phenomena is called the emptiness of other entities.’ In its commentary, the *Abhisamayālaṃkārālokā* (Illumination of the Ornament of Realization): ‘What is the emptiness of other entities,’ and so forth, is the teaching of the emptiness of other entities. The abiding nature of phenomena, the nature of phenomena, and so forth, which belong to the category of suchness, are such that whether the Tathāgatas appear in the world or not, the nature of phenomena abides as such from the beginning. In those phenomena, the absence of the entity of other phenomena such as the aggregates is called the emptiness of other entities.’ All such statements are intended to show the *gzhan stong* (异体空, other-emptiness) of the ultimate truth, which is the correct understanding of the essence as emptiness. Therefore, there are many faults in disparaging it. Fifth, the essence of the teachings thus explained is a place to be revered with faith and respect, and should not be treated with disbelief or disrespect, because many faults are said to arise. As it says in the *Aṅgulimālīya Sūtra* (Sutra of Aṅgulimāla): ‘Those beings who previously became animals, copulated with their own mothers, and whose minds were intoxicated, even when sleeping, make a grinding sound with their teeth, and do not believe in the *Tathāgatagarbha* (如来藏, the womb of the thus-gone), that is, the *dharmatā* (法性, the nature of phenomena). In the future, any being who makes a grinding sound with their teeth will not believe in the *Tathāgatagarbha*.’
