Furthermore, one must also receive vows in the presence of the Buddhas, because without it, the previous confession alone will not be fully effective. As it is said in the *Triskandha Sutra*: 'Hereafter, I will also take vows.' And in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: 'This is not virtuous, hereafter I will not do it.' So, can sins be purified by just that? No, eradicating them from the root depends on the power of applying all antidotes. What are they? As it is said in the *Śikṣāsamuccaya*: 'The purification of sins is taught in the *Sutra of the Four Dharmas*. If a Bodhisattva Mahasattva (great being) possesses four dharmas, they will overcome the sins they have committed and accumulated.' What are the four? They are: complete repentance, applying antidotes, the power of turning away from wrongdoing, and the power of reliance. Complete repentance is having great regret for engaging in non-virtuous actions. Applying antidotes is diligently engaging in virtuous actions even after engaging in non-virtuous actions. Turning away from wrongdoing is taking vows properly and obtaining the vow not to act. The power of reliance is taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and not abandoning the mind of enlightenment. If one relies on those with these powers, sins will not be able to overcome them.' As stated above, striving to cultivate the view of realizing emptiness and aspiring to cultivate the mind of enlightenment is the power of applying all antidotes. Third, as an antidote to jealousy, explaining the limb of rejoicing, which is divided into two: rejoicing in the virtuous deeds done by others and taking upon oneself the sins and sufferings done by them. First is rejoicing. Who rejoices? The doer is me. What is rejoiced in? In the virtues accumulated by the Sugatas (Tathāgata, 如来), Pratyekabuddhas (独觉), Śrāvakas (声闻), and the sons of the Buddhas (Bodhisattvas), and all other good deeds done by worldly people. The second is divided into two: taking upon oneself the cause of non-virtue and taking upon oneself the result of suffering. First, if one should rejoice in the virtuous deeds done by others, then how should one deal with the non-virtuous deeds done by them? I willingly and joyfully, without hesitation, plunge into the hells. Why? Because those other beings whose minds are deluded by the poison of afflictions... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, whatever non-virtue there is that will certainly cause one to experience the maturation of suffering in the hell realms will be eliminated by that. The word 'ཁོ་ན་(khona)' expresses the wish that the actor does not have to experience the maturation. Second, if one asks: 'Well then, what is to be done about those sufferings that have already ripened in the streams of others?' May whatever suffering there is of all sentient beings be taken on by me, the Bodhisattva. What is the purpose of taking it on in that way? May the world be satisfied with the nectar of the bliss of pacified nirvana, and having their minds virtuous, may they do only happiness, abandoning suffering. 'Satisfied' does not mean being satisfied by experiencing the bliss of liberation, but being satisfied by having obtained its benefit. Or, according to this text: 'May the world be satisfied with the nectar of worldly bliss, and having their minds completely pacified, may they do virtuous deeds!' Through the power of the Bodhisattva voluntarily taking on the sins and sufferings of others, may the world be satisfied temporarily with the bliss of higher realms, and ultimately be established in the bliss of nirvana. As it also says in the Bodhicaryavatara: 'For the guests of beings traveling the path of existence, and those who wish to enjoy the enjoyment of bliss, this is the supreme source of bliss, which satisfies the great guests of sentient beings.' This is in accordance with what was said. Now explaining the two branches that are done for the sake of others: Second, the branches that are done for the sake of others are two: urging the Bodhisattvas to attain enlightenment, and requesting them to remain for a long time after teaching the Dharma. The first has three parts: wishing that those beings who have not generated the great mind of enlightenment (Mahabodhi-citta) will generate it, and wishing that those who have trained will attain enlightenment. First, may the wish for the truly perfect enlightenment, which is to be sought after, arise quickly in the minds of these ordinary beings. Second, for those who have generated the mind of enlightenment, may they accomplish the collections of the great enlightenment, the six perfections (Paramitas), just as they are in the proper manner. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'Giving and ethics are the collections of merit, wisdom is the collection of wisdom, and the other two are both.' Third, having accomplished those collections of virtue, may they gradually obtain the ten grounds (Bhumis), hold the lineage of the Complete Buddha, the protector of the three existences (Triloka), make their lineage never cease, and destroy the enemies of the two obscurations (Dve-avarana). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
