As it is said, 'The nature of mind is clear light.' Therefore, by blocking the two activities of grasping and being grasped through mindfulness and awareness, remaining in equanimity with the Dharma nature of mind, which is naturally clear light, is called taming the mind. This is also called quiescence (shamatha). As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras (Mdo sde'i rgyan): 'Because the mind abides in the mind, and because of the excellent discrimination of dharmas, there are quiescence and insight.' Third, as it says: 'Having understood that afflictions are completely destroyed by insight endowed with perfect quiescence, one should first seek quiescence, which is manifestly attained by those without attachment to the world.' As explained above, to realize quiescence, one must first be free from attachment to the desire realm. This is explained as follows: May my mind, as a Bodhisattva, be without attachment to the nature of the desire realm, just as to something impure. How is that? Like the wealth of the lord of the gods, the chief of the thirty-three, and the chief of humans, the wheel-turning king, which is not mixed with sin, is sacred, and is supreme because of its abundance. As stated in the Uttaratantra (rGyud bla ma): 'Just as there is no pleasant scent in impurity, there is no happiness in the five realms of existence.' Second, even so, if one thinks to take pleasure in the higher realms, may I, as a Bodhisattva, not be delighted in all that wanders in existence. The reason for this is that it does not transcend the suffering of conditioned existence. For example, it is like dwelling in a burning iron house, where one does not transcend the suffering of suffering. Second, then, will one not take birth in the three realms? Driven by compassion and aspiration, may I take birth in accordance with the needs of benefiting other sentient beings. As it is said in the Uttaratantra: 'Although free from the poverty of birth and so forth, the wise rely on it in order to generate compassion for beings.' Second, what should be done with the quiescence that is without attachment to the three realms? By manifesting extraordinary qualities such as clairvoyance, may I accomplish the benefit of sentient beings. To show this: For all the three types of beings gathered by the three predispositions, having accomplished the abundant happiness of dwelling in the Dharma that is seen in the present, may I bestow perfect enlightenment, the pinnacle of their respective vehicles. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Who performs this? A: All the sons of the Buddhas, the Bodhisattvas. Q: How is it done? A: By obtaining all one hundred and twenty (samadhis) mentioned in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, such as 'Heroic Progress,' 'Treasury of Space,' and 'Immaculate.' Q: Why is it called 'Heroic Progress'? A: Because upon gaining mastery over a certain samadhi, one becomes like a lion in full display, performing various heroic acts in inconceivable ways, hence it is called that. In short, the 'Lion's Roar Samadhi' mentioned in the Mother Sutra (referring to the Prajnaparamita Sutra) and the 'Heroic Progress Samadhi' are the same in meaning. Its essence is the Prajnaparamita (Perfection of Wisdom), but when practicing the six paramitas, it belongs to the Dhyana Paramita (Perfection of Meditation). The meditation taught by this treatise (referring to the Abhisamayalankara) can be summarized into three types: worldly meditation associated with attachment to samsara; meditation of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas associated with attachment to nirvana; and Bodhisattva meditation that does not abide in either extreme. Here, the vow made through aspiration refers only to the latter. Because accomplishing vast benefit for sentient beings depends on meditation. As the Sutra Ornament states: 'Six superknowledges and three vidyas, eight liberations and eight victories, cessation, ten spheres of totality and samadhis, the power of attaining immeasurable stability.' The second (special conduct) is also divided into two parts as before. The first part, the Ornament states: 'The mind abides within, relying on mindfulness and diligence, generating bliss, mastering the abodes of superknowledge, it is the lord of all dharmas, those have three aspects, having fully understood such meditation, the wise should diligently cultivate it.' The second part, as before, 'Meditation is the support, the basis,' etc. Sixth, Vowing to Obtain the Perfection of Wisdom Sixth, vowing to obtain the Perfection of Wisdom is divided into two: vowing to obtain it oneself and vowing to teach it to others. The first is further divided into three: vowing to manifest worldly wisdom, vowing to obtain Hinayana (small vehicle) transcendental wisdom, and vowing to obtain Mahayana (great vehicle) transcendental wisdom. The first is: like the eighteen different fields of crafts, and worldly treatises. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
