As the scripture says, 'I have obtained a Dharma like nectar, but no matter who I show it to, they cannot understand it.' Among the three types of patience, the most supreme is the patience of having a firm understanding of the Dharma. And this patience is further divided into three types: small, medium, and large. The object of patience is the Dharma called emptiness, and emptiness is distinguished by understanding the three types of selflessness. The second part is divided into two points: determining the common patience, and clarifying that the Bodhisattva's patience is supreme. The first point, in the Ornament of Clear Realization, it says: 'Not regarding beings as repulsive, possessing compassion based on Dharma, therefore proclaiming five benefits, this can accomplish the benefit of both, asceticism is superior and complete, in this there are three, understanding such patience, the wise practice accordingly.' This is determined from the six aspects of essence, cause, result, function, possession, and entry. The second point, as the scripture says, 'Patience is the foundation and basis,' which is similar to the previous situation of generosity. Fourth, the vow of diligence pāramitā Fourth, the vow of diligence pāramitā is divided into two points: explaining the meaning of the scripture separately, and determining the diligence of the Bodhisattva. The first point is divided into two categories: constant diligence and respectful diligence. First, the Bodhisattva, even for a brief moment, will not stop performing vast virtuous deeds. Why? In order to bear the lowliness of all beings. How long? Lifetime after lifetime, until countless eons. This is also explained in the Ornament of Clear Realization, from the path of accumulation to the ten bhūmis all belong to the category of diligence. As the scripture says: 'Also, the diligence of decline and increase, and abandoning the companions that do not conform to liberation, that is the superior entry of diligence, diligence is also said to be of great significance.' This is explained in conjunction with the right abandonment, roots, powers, bodhi limbs, and the perfection of the ten pāramitās, which belongs to the category of constant diligence. Second, respectful diligence is explained as five types in the Ornament of the Sūtras. As the scripture says: 'First is the armor diligence, then the diligence of entering accordingly, do not...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Non-retreating, non-contaminating, contentment, and diligence are taught by all the Buddhas.' These texts should be combined. First, regarding non-retreating diligence, there are two aspects: vowing to undertake all the affairs of other beings; and praying that they entrust these affairs to oneself. The first aspect is: like a servant, I will accomplish all the tasks of all beings. The word 'and' implies including the following meaning. The second aspect is: may all the burdens of all beings be relinquished to me and entrusted to me, and may other beings dwell in ease without being busy with any affairs. Regarding the diligence of combination, showing the distinctions based on body, speech, and mind: may the body become subservient to serving others, may speech delight in showing others, and may the mind of the Bodhisattva always think of benefiting other beings. In the Ornament of the Sutras, the distinctions of the seven diligences are explained, where the diligences of body and mind are taught, but the diligence of speech is not separately distinguished. Regarding non-contaminating diligence: even if I have to endure suffering alone in hell for countless eons, may I not have any weariness of mind, and may I bring beings to complete maturity. This meaning is also as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'The giving of a Bodhisattva is such that even if one being causes harm for many eons, they will not become angry, what need is there to mention the opposite?' Regarding the armor-like diligence: I will don this armor that completely matures the three types of sentient beings. Why is it necessary to do so? In order to tame sentient beings. Through what means do we tame them? Through the order of benefiting others that was just mentioned above. Incidentally, regarding the manner of taming those to be tamed, as stated in the One Hundred and Fifty Verses of Praise to the Brave Teacher: 'You encourage the obtaining of rewards, punish theft, correct the deceitful, gently persuade others to join the Sangha, guide the tamed onto the path, and remain neutral towards the stubborn. Therefore, you are the unsurpassed tamer of beings.' Diligence of not knowing contentment --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
