Through the six gates of giving and entering, the discipline of the three vehicles is generally recognized as common. Among them, the discipline of the Bodhisattva is particularly emphasized, as from 'Discipline is the basis and foundation' to 'It is considered supreme from the perspective of status,' the explanation of these eight categories is the same as in the previous case of giving. Third, the commitment to the perfection of patience. The commitment to the perfection of patience is divided into two parts: explaining the meaning of the text separately and identifying the patience of the Bodhisattva. The first part has three aspects: committing to the patience of not minding harm, committing to the patience of accepting suffering, and committing to the patience of having a firm understanding of the Dharma. Regarding the first point, the connection between the preceding and following is: guarding discipline does not harm others, so it is impossible to be harmed in retaliation. However, if one has not harmed others but is harmed, what should be done? In general, the perpetrator who becomes the object of patience must be cherished, because without the perpetrator, there would be no patience, and without patience, one cannot attain Buddhahood. As it is said in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: 'In the world, there are many beggars, but those who inflict harm are rare. Therefore, without striving, it is like finding a treasure in the house. Since they have become friends in the practice of enlightenment, I should rejoice in my enemies.' Therefore, not only should perpetrators be cherished, but those who inflict harm without having been harmed should be especially cherished. For them, there are two things to do: loving-kindness and compassion. The first is loving-kindness. For such people, as it is said in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: 'If one does not harm them first, no one will harm them without reason.' Therefore, they are a particularly rare source of merit. This means that even if the Bodhisattva himself is without fault, and someone saws my head into a hundred pieces, I should continuously cherish them in my heart. How is this done? Just as a mother cherishes her only child. As it is said in the *Ratnagotravibhāga*: 'Just as a pigeon cherishes its beloved child, embracing its child closely. Likewise, those who are angry with such a one, cherish all beings in the same way.' The second is compassion. If a perpetrator is truly angry with the Bodhisattva, even without a particular reason --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even if they take my life, may they not incur endless karmic consequences, may they not become cruel and unsuitable, may they not become extremely heavy. If it is not out of extreme anger, or if it is not for a particularly important reason that they take life, then such a Vipāka (Skt.) will not arise, so there is no need to pray. As the Ratnāvalī (Skt., 'Garland of Jewels') says: 'Those who are full of love with compassion in their hearts will not be at ease even in peace, let alone be attached to worldly happiness and their own lives?' The previous treatise showed loving-kindness towards the harm-doer, while this shows compassion towards the harm-doer, because loving-kindness is a state connected with happiness, while compassion is a state separated from suffering. As the Ratnāvalī (Skt.) says: 'Having the intention of separation.' The second part includes: refuting the cause of accepting the suffering of others, and showing the knowledge of accepting suffering. First: I, the Bodhisattva, will not give up patience. When? When the obstacles to patience have not manifested, let alone. Even if others treat me with anger, secretly insult me with words, openly reveal my faults, or beat me with their bodies, that is, when the obstacles to patience have manifested, I will not give up patience. As the Bodhicaryāvatāra (Skt., 'Engaging in the Bodhisattva's Deeds') says: 'If I do not endure these due to my own faults, then for this source of merit, I am only creating obstacles. If something does not exist, something will not arise; if something exists, something will exist. Since this is the case, how can it be said to be an obstacle? When a beggar appears in time, it does not create an obstacle to giving.' Second: I will take upon myself all the sufferings of other sentient beings. For what purpose? In order to accomplish the conduct of the Buddhas' sons The connection between them is, as the Bodhicaryāvatāra (Skt.) says: 'If I do not completely exchange my own happiness for the suffering of others, I will not attain Buddhahood, and even in Samsara (Skt.) there will be no happiness.' Third: May the rope of doubt not waver in my mind, even for a moment. What is the object of doubt? Even doubt about the Dharma (ཆོས་པའི་ཆོས,梵文:dharma,罗马转写:dharma,字面意思:法) of the Dharma. The reasons for doubt arising are: it has never been obtained before, it is very profound, and it is the pinnacle of reason. As it is said: Profound and peaceful, free from elaboration, luminous, unconditioned. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
