And there is no (attachment), no pride from praise, no attachment from happiness, and no discouragement from suffering. Therefore, one who is not swayed by the eight worldly dharmas should understand emptiness and be able to speak of emptiness.' Therefore, if one can determine that these eight worldly dharmas are contrary to the protection against misdeeds, then many root downfalls will naturally be avoided. As the Vinaya Twenty Verses says: 'Due to attachment to gain and respect, being stingy and not giving away wealth.' These two situations are considered downfalls. In the Compendium of Trainings it says: 'Due to gain, respect, and words, slandering others.' These situations will also be naturally avoided. Therefore, being accustomed to liking quiet places away from noise, base thoughts, and the eight dharmas, one can guard against all precepts that contradict the protection against misdeeds, because all faults that are contrary to it arise from the three causes such as the discrimination of the eight dharmas. As the Sutra Requested by the Fierce Householder says: 'When a Bodhisattva renounces and dwells in a quiet place, he should think: Why have I come to a quiet place? I have come to a quiet place out of fear. What fear? Fear of noise, fear of association, fear of desire, hatred, and ignorance.' Second, the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas: 'I will abandon.' What to abandon? Arrogance towards beings and pride arising from conceit. The reason for abandoning is: if one possesses these, one cannot become a vessel for accumulating merit. The 'pride' mentioned here is a general term, which can be divided into two types. The difference between the two is that the Abhidharmakosha says: 'Conceit, pride, arrogance are, due to attachment to one's own qualities, the mind is completely attached.' This is the difference between being proud of one's own qualities and being arrogant due to comparison with others. How to abandon it? Like a nameless child in front of people of noble castes such as Brahmins. As the sutra says: 'A Bodhisattva should regard himself as a child.' Represented by these two things that obstruct the gathering of virtuous dharmas, there are many others as well. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One must abandon them. As it is said in the 'Friendly Epistle': 'Miserliness, deceit, attachment, and laziness, Conceit, excessive pride, desire, hatred, Lineage, appearance, learning, youth, And arrogance due to great power, regard them as enemies.' These are obstacles to accumulating virtuous Dharma. The conducive conditions are also mentioned in the same text: 'Therefore, in order to increase virtuous Dharma, You should always be respectful and diligent.' 'If someone formerly acted carelessly, But later becomes diligent, Like the moon freed from clouds, they are extremely beautiful, Like Joyful, Angulimala, Seeing him brings happiness.' Thus it is said. Similarly, in the 'Lion's Roar of Maitreya Sutra': 'A renunciate who possesses four types of arrogance will go to hell. What are the four? Being arrogant and careless due to much learning; Being arrogant and careless due to gain and respect; Being arrogant and careless due to friends and the houses that give alms; And being arrogant due to the qualities of study, praising oneself and disparaging others.' Thus it is said. Third, explaining the discipline of benefiting sentient beings. How to benefit sentient beings, and then how to become accustomed to the discipline of a Bodhisattva. First, to cause beings to practice the sacred Dharma that accords with their respective thoughts, and to practice it oneself. Here, practice and conduct are the four things needed to gather the limbs of benefiting sentient beings, namely, the practice of benefit and the teaching of agreement with benefit. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'The third is practice, the fourth is purification.' How to do it? Like a gathering of relatives of a noble family who help each other. This also represents the first two objects of gathering, namely giving and pleasant speech. Because they help each other for the sake of giving and speaking pleasantly. As it is also said in the Ornament: 'Giving is like showing, receiving, and guiding, and oneself following others, Pleasant speech, beneficial conduct, and agreement with benefit, are considered to be so.' The four can also be grouped into two: first, the gathering of material things, and the rest is the gathering of Dharma. That is also twofold: establishing others in it, and oneself also practicing it. The first of these is also twofold: teaching the Dharma of scripture, and causing others to practice the meaning of the teachings. These four are the indispensable causes for benefiting sentient beings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
