‘Giving land and fearlessness, understanding such giving, the wise truly practice.’ This is said to be identified from six aspects: nature, cause, result, action, possession, and entry. Secondly, in the Ornament of the Sutras, it is said: ‘Giving depends on support and basis, cause and dedication, cause and wisdom, pure lands, and is supreme through the door of place.’ This is said to be identified from eight kinds of distinctions. ‘Support’ refers to whose giving, that is, the Bodhisattva's giving. ‘Basis’ refers to what is given, that is, wealth, fearlessness, and Dharma. ‘Cause’ refers to with what motivation giving is done, that is, compassion. ‘Dedication’ refers to for what purpose giving is done, that is, for the sake of great Bodhi. ‘Cause’ refers to from where it arises, that is, from previous habituation. ‘Wisdom’ refers to which of the worldly and transmundane controls it, that is, giving completely seized by wisdom. ‘Pure land’ refers to the object to whom giving is done, that is, the pure land of qualities, compassion, and benefit, etc. ‘Place’ refers to where giving abides, that is, faith, attention, and samadhi.’ This is explained in the commentary. These respectively show that the first is merely showing the meaning, the second is what is to be done, the third is the doer, the fourth is the purpose, the fifth is the source, the sixth is the connection, the seventh is the place of abiding, and the eighth is the object indicated. If ‘place’ is said before ‘pure land,’ it is more appropriate. By learning giving in this way, not only does much merit increase, but also many faults of downfall are avoided. As it is said: ‘Due to attachment and miserliness, one does not give to beggars.’ And ‘With gain and respect, and the cause of verses, one slanders others.’ And ‘Stealing the wealth of the Three Jewels is considered a downfall of defeat.’ These faults are naturally avoided. Second, taking the vow of the pāramitā of ethics. Second, taking the vow of the pāramitā of ethics is divided into two parts: the meaning of the text and the identification of the Bodhisattva's ethics itself. The first part is further divided into two points: the connection is that ethics needs to be explained after giving. As it is said in the Introduction to the Middle Way: ‘If beings break the foot of ethics, even if they are rich in enjoyment through giving, they still fall into evil destinies.’ And the same treatise says: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If one diligently cultivates the field of virtuous discipline, the fruits of enjoyment will never cease. This is the first meaning. Secondly, regarding the related content, it can be divided into three aspects: vowing to uphold the discipline of abstaining from misconduct, vowing to uphold the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas, and vowing to uphold the discipline of benefiting sentient beings. The first aspect is further divided into two points: abandoning the misconduct common to the Shravaka vehicle, and abandoning the inferior mind that is not common. The first point is further divided into two points: abandoning the naturally sinful, and not being defiled by the prescribed sinful. The first point is: After generating the Bodhicitta, I will abandon all sins and evils from the depths of my heart, just as I would stay far away from impure things. The second point is: Never destroy the precepts established by the Buddha, which are like a dam that can block the river of evil deeds from its source. Here, 'dam' refers to a water dam. The Pratimoksha of the Shravaka vehicle only involves abandoning the seven things to be abandoned by body and speech, along with their related actions, while the Pratimoksha of the Bodhisattva focuses more on abandoning the three faults of mind. Therefore, there are ten things to be abandoned along with their related actions. Among them, abandoning hatred is particularly important. As the Ornament of the Sutras says: 'This hatred always contradicts all sentient beings.' Regarding attachment, attachment to external objects contradicts the discipline, but attachment to sentient beings is not necessarily so. As the Ornament of the Sutras says: 'For the benefit of sentient beings, attachment to them does not become a downfall.' Strictly observing the discipline of abstaining from misconduct itself can prevent many of the root downfalls related to the Bodhisattva vows. Because when the three faults of mind are prevented, there is no opportunity for the corresponding downfalls to occur. For example, when one no longer harbors hatred, there will be no opportunity to commit the five heinous crimes such as killing one's father, or the crimes that ministers might commit such as destroying towns. The second aspect is further divided into two points: abandoning noise and inferior mind, and abandoning thoughts of the eight worldly concerns. The first point is: Staying away from attachment to the body and life, and the many distractions that arise from it, and always delighting in living in solitary places. Here, there are two types of solitary places: one is the commonly recognized solitary place that is far away from worldly villages; the other is the solitary place that is not associated with an inferior mind. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
