As stated in the sutra: 'Those who possess a retinue should rely on this method; it accomplishes the benefit of all beings and is highly praised as an excellent means.' How does a Bodhisattva benefit sentient beings like a relative? The Ornament of the Sutras states: 'Those who constantly hold sentient beings with equal intention, causing them to arise in noble grounds, increasing their virtue, completely protecting them from wrongdoing, and purifying their hearing, with these five actions, a Bodhisattva is like a mother to sentient beings.' 'Constantly causing sentient beings to generate faith, teaching superior precepts and so forth, guiding them to liberation. Praying to the Buddhas for sentient beings and clearing away their obscurations. With these five actions, Bodhisattvas are like fathers to sentient beings.' 'Keeping secret from sentient beings what should not be taught, scolding those who have fallen from discipline, praising those who are perfectly endowed, bestowing instructions, and subduing the maras. With these five actions, Bodhisattvas are like limbs to sentient beings.' 'Regarding the purification of afflictions, not confusing one's own mind, bestowing mundane and supramundane perfections. Acting without discouragement, constantly желая benefit and happiness. With these five actions, Bodhisattvas are like friends to sentient beings.' 'To mature oneself and sentient beings, constantly possessing discipline, speaking of the correct path to liberation, enduring the slander of wrong views, bestowing two perfections. Being skilled in these methods. With these five actions, Bodhisattvas are like servants to sentient beings.' ' желая to obtain forbearance of non-arising dharmas, teaching all vehicles, guiding to the accomplishment of yoga, repaying kindness, and not looking at the ripening. With these five actions, Bodhisattvas are like teachers to sentient beings.' 'Diligently working for the benefit of sentient beings, perfecting the accumulation of merit, quickly liberating, abandoning unfavorable factors, and guiding to mundane and supramundane perfections. Bodhisattvas are like craftsmen to sentient beings.' Thus it is said. Therefore, the discipline is divided into three, of which the first is called 'the discipline of vows,' and the latter two are called 'the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas' and 'the discipline of benefiting sentient beings.' The Ornament states: 'The vows and diligence of the sons of the Victorious Ones' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

‘Always uphold the three aspects of self-nature discipline,’ it is said. A Bodhisattva who possesses this is termed ‘diligent in discipline.’ The second point is: I, the Bodhisattva, shall become accustomed to the discipline that is the nature of vows and diligence. What is this discipline like? It can be viewed from the difference in function and the difference in essence. First, it brings coolness like moonlight and peace of mind like a white lotus. As it is said, ‘Obtain coolness,’ it is capable of rescuing from the heat of the lower realms. The scriptures explain ten benefits of guarding discipline, among which it is mentioned that one gradually obtains the Dharma of great joy and passes away without regret. Second, it is free from the faults of opposing factors and possesses the virtues of favorable factors. First, ‘root and branches’ refers to the meaning of root and limbs. It is free from the defilements of roots such as attachment, its branches of self-nature are not broken by downfalls such as theft, it is not stained by precepts such as eating what is not given, and it is not mixed with inferior intentions such as mental engagement. Second, it possesses the three virtues of being complete, peaceful, and adorned. First, it is not like practicing only one aspect of the limbs, but rather the limbs of abandoning all ten non-virtuous actions, or as explained in the Ornament of the Sutras, possessing six limbs. Peaceful refers to the difference in motivation, being held by the thought of renunciation. Adorned refers to the difference in function. As it is said in the Sutra of Perfect Discipline, ‘One who possesses discipline is the best of all ornaments.’ These meanings are also in accordance with what is said in the Letter to a Friend: ‘You should rely on discipline that is not broken, not inferior, not mixed, and pure,’ and in the Treasury of Abhidharma, ‘Broken discipline does not bring benefit; rely on its antidote and peace.’ Second, identifying the discipline of the Bodhisattva itself, as it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: ‘The six limbs are held by a peaceful mind, proceeding happily, becoming a giver, being a support, peaceful and fearless, possessing a collection of merit, obtaining the nature of conventional truth, existing in those who abide in vows.’ Having fully understood such discipline, the wise should practice it correctly. Thus it is said. This explains the essence, cause, result, and function. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
