Motivated by the power of diligent effort, may I engage without laziness. For what purpose? To hear even a single word well-spoken by the Buddha. How so? Even by crossing pits filled with burning embers without gaps. This principle is also reflected in the Sutra on Repaying Kindness, where our own teacher, who was once a king, said: 'If there is birth, there is death. Cessation is bliss.' Just to hear this well-spoken phrase, it is like lighting thousands of lamps on one's body. The second part is divided into two parts as before. The first part is: In the Ornament Sutra, it says: 'One should also rejoice greatly in virtue, relying on faith and aspiration, increasing qualities such as mindfulness, and being the enemy of all afflictions, possessing qualities such as non-attachment. One should know seven aspects in those qualities, knowing the nature of diligence in this way, therefore the wise should cultivate it.' The seven mentioned here refer to the three types of joy in the three trainings, the two types of diligence of body and mind, and the two distinctions of respectful practice and constant practice. The second part is: 'Diligence is the support and foundation,' etc., as mentioned before. Fifth, Taking the Vow of the Perfection of Dhyana (Meditation) (Fifth) Taking the Vow of the Perfection of Dhyana, including: Pointing out that dhyana that aligns with samsara and nirvana should be abandoned, and pointing out that dhyana that benefits sentient beings should be embraced. The first part is divided into two points: explaining the stages of achieving samadhi, and refuting that its result is attachment to the upper realms (form and formless realms), and that it should not be practiced even as a cause of nirvana. The first part is divided into two points: identifying the special shamatha (calm abiding), explaining the method of subduing distraction with it, and showing that this shamatha depends on detachment from desire. The first point is: May I become accustomed to generating uncontaminated joy by abiding with one-pointed mind. Through what means? By attaining the perfection of abiding, that is, reaching the ultimate of the fourth dhyana. As it is said in the Ornament Sutra: 'Having attained the extremely pure fourth dhyana.' This is because the abiding of the mind is supreme, therefore, it is known from the Compendium of Topics that all qualities such as liberation, cessation, subjugation, and power must rely on this to be achieved. And in this treatise, saying 'become accustomed to generating joy' can also be explained as obtaining those qualities. How to achieve that perfect ultimate? Through dhyana and the form realm. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, (Bodhisattvas) should abandon delighting in and pursuing the fruition of all formless absorptions. This is because, generally, the necessity of entering into meditative concentration and the formless absorptions is for: abandoning opposing factors, abiding in comfort in the present dharma, manifesting qualities, and for taking birth in higher realms. However, here, Bodhisattvas should not pursue the latter, as it says in the Ornament for Clear Realization: 'The limbs are completely exhausted.' As it is explained in this text, one should abandon delighting in the arising of the fruit. The other three are to be pursued here, because the necessity of generating the samadhi of calm abiding in one's own mindstream is for the benefit of others, and to accomplish that, these three are necessarily required as limbs. Second, to tame (one's mind). Where to tame? Where the elephant of the mind is extremely difficult to tame. Why is it difficult? Because its nature is to waver without effort. Where does it waver? It wavers in engaging in either the grasping or the grasper of the wrong path. Regarding this, it is also said in the Sutra: 'Taming the mind is excellent, taming the mind brings happiness.' So, how does one tame it? It says in the Jewel Crest Sutra: 'If one seeks the mind everywhere, one does not see it truly within, one does not see it truly without, one does not see it truly in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases. Just as the edge of a sword cannot cut itself, and the tip of a finger cannot touch itself, so too, the mind itself cannot see itself. Thus, one-pointed, not scattered, not differentiated, one-pointed in calm abiding, without distraction, this is the abiding of the mind.' It also says in the Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra: 'I should strive to cultivate, and not abandon the nature of the mind. What is the nature of the mind? What is cultivation? The mind is like an illusion; there is no giving in it, this is called the nature of the mind.' Abandoning all possessions, dedicating them to purify all Buddha-fields, this is called cultivation. It also says in the Mother Sutra: 'No mind in the mind.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
