《A Memorandum Clarifying the Five Stages of Glorious Guhyasamaja: The Sun That Dispels Outer and Inner Darkness and Benefits Others》 I prostrate with reverence in body, speech, and mind to the supreme guru, the essence of all great secrets, indivisible! Having expressed homage in this way, I vow to compose: Based on other tantras and their authors, And the praises of this by others here, The five stages of Guhyasamaja, This illuminating sun will arise. The teachings explained here to be practiced, Are entirely condensed into the five stages, According to the intention of Nagarjuna, Explained by the glorious Chandrakirti. What are these? The preliminaries, gathered by the three isolations; the actual practice, distinguishing the two truths separately; and the ultimate result, union. The individual meanings of the words to be explained, the identification of the actual practice, the causes and conditions for accomplishing it, and the limbs of completing the accumulation of merit. Where are the body, speech, and mind based? By what are they isolated? It is the vajra of the ultimate bodhicitta of Samantabhadra, the body, speech, and mind vajras isolated from impure body, speech, and mind. The body is separated from the maturation of karma and afflictions, along with its possessor; and the ultimate wisdom of separation, and the union of the five winds. Impure speech is the wind of karma, with its three aspects of arising, abiding, and ceasing; it is also blessed with the essence of the three unchanging syllables. Impure mind is the non-authentic conceptual thought and consciousness; it is transformed into the sole wisdom, free from the aspects of grasping and being grasped. Why is it called the conventional truth? Because the illusory body that is to be obscured is obscured by the conceptual thought that obscures it, hence it is the conventional truth. By what is it the ultimate truth? All is emptiness, clear light; the noble mind that experiences it is the sole reason for the ultimate truth. The emptiness, the ultimate truth, spoken of as the moon entering the four and three channels, cannot be explained as true, because there is no noble mind to experience it. Regarding the identification of the two separately, first, the essence of body isolation is the complete support and what is supported, the purifying generation stage with conceptualization. It is not mentioned elsewhere than in the vajra of the closely obtained mind, but at that time, the accomplisher is only conceptual thought, so it is said to be with conceptualization. But when it is perfected, it arises as the illusory body without conceptualization. At that time, the dharmadhatu wisdom of all phenomena is fully enlightened. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
