Question: Is it necessary to have a correct understanding of emptiness (Tibetan: སྟོང་ཉིད།, Meaning: emptiness) in order to purify obscurations? Answer: Yes, it is necessary. Because if, according to the Prajnaparamita system (Tibetan: ཕར་ཕྱིན་ལུགས།, Meaning: Prajnaparamita), one does not fully realize emptiness, it is impossible to eliminate the subtle obscurations to knowledge (Tibetan: ཤེས་བྱའི་སྒྲིབ་པ།, Meaning: obscurations to knowledge). Similarly, if, according to the mantra system (Tibetan: སྔགས་ལུགས།, Meaning: mantra system), one does not fully realize bliss and emptiness (Tibetan: བདེ་སྟོང་།, Meaning: bliss and emptiness), it is impossible to eliminate the subtle obscurations of great bliss. Nevertheless, these two methods of the Great Vehicle (Tibetan: ཐེག་པ་ཆེན་པོ།, Meaning: Mahayana) differ in the depth and speed of realizing the nature of reality (Tibetan: གནས་ལུགས།, Meaning: the way things are), and in the unsurpassed and unchanging bliss. Therefore, the correct view (Tibetan: ལྟ་བ།, Meaning: view) of the mantra system is superior. Another question is: 'When the teacher of ideation is exhausted, there is no fruit for black and white karma.' Is it reasonable for Yang Gonpa (Tibetan: ཡང་དགོན་པ།) to say this? Although I do not know his intention, if we explain it according to the teachings of the Sutra Pitaka (Tibetan: སྡེ་སྣོད།, Meaning: collection of discourses), when the elaboration (Tibetan: སྤྲོས་པ།, Meaning: elaboration) is completely cut off by the view, it can be said that 'the teacher of ideation is exhausted,' because at that time all conceptual thoughts (Tibetan: རྣམ་རྟོག, Meaning: conceptual thought) have ceased. Since even black and white karma cannot be determined, what need is there to mention their results? Those Tibetans who do not stop conceptual thoughts but claim to be free from elaboration are inconsistent with both the views of Nagarjuna (Sanskrit Devanagari: नागार्जुन, Sanskrit Romanization: Nāgārjuna) and Asanga (Sanskrit Devanagari: असङ्ग, Sanskrit Romanization: Asaṅga), and contradict all the pith instructions. Why is this so? Because the elaboration to be refuted can only be truly existent (Tibetan: བདེན་གྲུབ།, Meaning: truly existent), and the so-called 'freedom from elaboration,' if it does not refute this one thing to be refuted, namely true existence, then not refuting other extremes such as 'non-existence' (Tibetan: བདེན་མེད།, Meaning: non-existence) is only half-baked. This statement of Yang Gonpa can also be explained as follows: According to the Abhidharma (Sanskrit Devanagari: अभिधर्म, Sanskrit Romanization: Abhidharma, Meaning: higher knowledge), 'white' refers to contaminated virtuous karma (Tibetan: ཟག་བཅས།, Meaning: contaminated), and if we understand 'the teacher of ideation' as the time when conceptual thoughts are exhausted, then because there is no creator, neither black nor white karma will produce results. When will conceptual thoughts be exhausted? The Shravakas (Tibetan: སྡེ་སྣོད་པ།, Meaning: Shravakas) say that they are exhausted on the eighth bhumi (Tibetan: ས་བརྒྱད་པ།, Meaning: eighth bhumi), but in reality, when abiding in the nature of reality, one does not accumulate contaminated karma. What has been said above is based on the view of abiding in the nature of reality. If we distinguish in post-meditation (Tibetan: རྗེས་ཐོབ།, Meaning: post-meditation), then the exhaustion of the teacher of ideation is in Buddhahood (Tibetan: སངས་རྒྱས།, Meaning: Buddhahood), at which time there is no result of black karma, but the result of white karma exists, because the result of uncontaminated karma (Tibetan: ཟག་པ་མེད།, Meaning: uncontaminated) is the Dharmakaya (Tibetan: ཆོས་ཀྱི་སྐུ།, Meaning: Dharmakaya), and the maturation of the complete accumulation of merit (Tibetan: བསོད་ནམས་ཀྱི་ཚོགས།, Meaning: merit accumulation). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
