If someone thinks that by observing sentient beings who contain the Tathāgatagarbha, they will become possessors of 'self' (Tibetan: བདག་, Sanskrit Devanagari: ātman, Sanskrit Romanization: ātman, Chinese literal meaning: self), then the answer to that is clearly stated in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, where the Omniscient One (Buddha) himself clearly explained it. After the pacification of the elaboration of 'self' and 'non-self' (Tibetan: བདག་མེད་, Sanskrit Devanagari: anātman, Sanskrit Romanization: anātman, Chinese literal meaning: non-self), the Mahāyāna's Uttaratantra states that there is a sacred 'self' (Tibetan: བདག་, Sanskrit Devanagari: ātman, Sanskrit Romanization: ātman, Chinese literal meaning: self). The Mahāyānasaṃgraha states that 'non-self' itself is the great 'self' (Tibetan: བདག་, Sanskrit Devanagari: ātman, Sanskrit Romanization: ātman, Chinese literal meaning: self). In the treatises of the Unsurpassed Vajrayāna, since the non-dual wisdom (Tibetan: གཉིས་མེད་ཡེ་ཤེས།) is often described as luminosity (Tibetan: འོད་གསལ།) and the supreme of the ultimate truth (Tibetan: དོན་དམ་བདེན་པ།), one should not be complacent about teaching permanence here. If someone thinks that explaining the ultimate truth with the seven vajra-like places (Tibetan: རྡོ་རྗེ་ལྟ་བུའི་གནས་བདུན།) is too extreme, then Asaṅga considers that there is a distinction between the two truths (Tibetan: བདེན་གཉིས།) in the Three Jewels (Tibetan: དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ།) and qualities and activities (Tibetan: ཡོན་ཏན་ཕྲིན་ལས།). Especially in the Abhisamayālaṃkāra, impurity and suchness (Tibetan: དེ་བཞིན་ཉིད།) are directly shown in the bodhicitta (Tibetan: བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔར།). If everything encompassed by the Buddha is the conventional truth (Tibetan: ཀུན་རྫོབ་བདེན་པ།), then there would be no Mahāyāna tenet that teaches 'existence,' because (the Buddha) has said that it is to abandon deceptive dharmas, etc. The two kinds of Jewels (Tibetan: དཀོན་མཆོག་རྣམ་གཉིས།) mentioned in other sūtras can be understood through the inference of the preceding content. Therefore, the Three Refuges (Tibetan: སྐྱབས་གསུམ།) in this treatise are determined to be the ultimate truth. If someone interprets Asaṅga's Mahāyānottaratantraśāstra as a reductio ad absurdum (Tibetan: ཐལ་འགྱུར།), that would be ridiculous. Apart from the tradition opened by the sūtras and Maitreya, this does not follow other explanatory traditions. You have excellently explained the great Madhyamaka path with the Buddha's prophecy and your own wisdom that does not rely on others, and you guide us without confusion, I pay homage to you! Whatever Asaṅga said, having been liberated from the obscurations of attachment and clinging, and whatever is said here, may all the merit that arises from this enable me to attain the state of permanence, bliss, self, and purity! This was composed by Mipham Gelek Namgyal, a recipient of the nectar rain of the noble Asaṅga and the ocean of wisdom, and the scribe was Chökyi Gyaltsen. May it be auspicious and perfect! Homage to the Buddha! This is called 'The Wish-Fulfilling Treasury: A Biography of the Second Omniscient One, Ārya Asaṅga, Entering the Teachings.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Homage to you, the great drumbeat known as Vasubandhu (Master of Various Treatises), pleasing to the ears of all! In these later times, though many feign praise, calling you 'wise,' many malicious minds bind you in the mire of realism. Now, the great stream of cleansing ablutions has waned. Holding the treasury of a hundred thousand Buddha-teachings, each day you recite upon your tongue, without losing a syllable, the supreme definitive meaning—the hundred-thousand-versed Perfection of Wisdom Sutra. O wise one, when you composed your treatises, the teachings of the Hearers (Shravakas) were mostly stained, and though the Great Vehicle (Mahayana) had dawned, it had not yet flourished. Seeing this, you composed many treatises on the Three Vehicles. Knowing that the Dharma of the Four Noble Truths and the distinction of the Two Truths are the root of all the Buddha's teachings, you fully elucidated all the definitive and provisional meanings of the Four Schools of Thought. Though the Vinaya (code of monastic discipline) and Sutra (discourses) of the Hearers' Vehicle are held in common by those who assert philosophical tenets, the Abhidharma (higher knowledge) treatises were muddled by stains. You clearly distinguished what should be accepted and rejected through scripture and reason. The non-self of phenomena (dharma-nairatmya) is mostly in accordance with the Abhidharma system, while the non-self of persons (pudgala-nairatmya) is in accordance with the Sutra teachings. That great treatise, the Abhidharmakosa, shines like the sun throughout the world. Without clearly explaining the subtle ego, one cannot properly demonstrate the non-self of phenomena. Therefore, you established through scripture and reason that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent. If subtle suffering is not explained as it is, one cannot differentiate between inner and outer liberation. Therefore, you extensively explained the suffering of conditioned existence (samskara-duhkha), which children do not perceive as suffering. If great ignorance is not explained as the root of samsara, one cannot distinguish between inner and outer paths. Therefore, you explained that grasping at a self, which is not mentioned in the Vedic scriptures, is the root of samsara. Thus, whoever cultivates that unerring path of seeing emptiness of self and what belongs to self, you say will attain the state of liberation, free from contention with the Buddha's teachings. Even many Hearers who are certain of being inferior, upon fully understanding the Dharma of the Four Noble Truths, may understand the non-self of phenomena in an instant, but you say they do not cultivate it. Here, some say that it is difficult to attain the state of liberation through the path explained by Vasubandhu. The non-self of persons, which is not explained in the Kosa, and the reasoning that explains it, were not spoken by the Buddha. If one cannot eliminate all the obscurations explained in one's own system with the antidotes explained therein, then the Dharma spoken by the Victorious One, which is suitable for beings' faculties... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
