Abiding in a state of ease, speaking of jesting matters, yet their eloquence and wisdom are not inferior to the wise. The wonderful tales they tell are respected by many. Being respected by many is not only the law of the world, but also transcends the world, with merit increasing day by day, being the lineage of the Dharma King. This work, entitled 'A Garland of Splendid Deeds: Wonderful Accounts of Jowo Je Lhachen and His Lineage,' was written at the request of the ruler of Narthang, Sherab Zangpo, by the scholar Pel Shakya Chokden from the region of U-Tsang. The writing took place in the Wood Snake year (Tibetan calendar), near the first auspicious day of the Revati constellation. The scribe was Geshe Chokyi Gyaltsen. May all be auspicious! When the venerable Rinchen Zangpo was born, flowers rained down thirty-five times. I prostrate to you, praying for you to grant wisdom. During the reign of Lhachen Trisong Detsen, many Indian Panditas rose like the sun. When [requesting entry into the Mandala of Vajradhatu], darkness fell, Rinchen Trinley Zangpo rose like the moon. He propagated the supreme, unsurpassed tantras of the Mahayana Dharma that were in the hearts of many great Panditas, as well as the ancient Nyingma tradition of secret mantras. Many intelligent people attained the siddhis of vidyadharas. At that time, the tantric scriptures were widely spread, and many people practiced according to the fierce deity's rituals. Then, Lha-tsun Yeshe-Od (Light of Wisdom) ordered: 'Great wise one, you should bring the glorious Palden Duspa (Glorious Assembly) and the yogic tantra scriptures, including commentaries, completely and clearly.' 'Through the practice of the Thubten Norbu (Jewel of the Doctrine), which has three stages of purification, refute the wrongdoings of the secret mantras.' You erected the victory banner of explanation and practice at the summit. Through translation, collation, explanation, and listening, your disciples and their disciples continued like a flowing river. You possess precious Dharma activities. Few translators like you have appeared. Like great rivers flowing into the ocean, many scripture holders, such as paṇḍitas [Śraddhākaravarma (Faith-Making Armor), Saṃghāśānti (Sangha Peace), Padmakara (Lotus Maker), Prajñākaravarma (Wisdom-Making Armor), Kamalagupta (Lotus Protection), Dīpaṃkaraśrījñāna (Lamp-Bestowing Glorious Wisdom), Eastern Dharmapala (Sharphyog Dharmapala)], naturally gathered and entrusted you with the tradition of empowerment and explanation, as well as complete sets of scriptures. The supreme feast of the excellent Dharma, the wonderful spectacle of the yoga tantras, can be seen and enjoyed in this degenerate age, all thanks to your compassionate kindness. [Ascetic] closed the three doors and practiced single-mindedly. When three thoughts [unwholesome, neutral, and clinging to virtue as a sign] arise, may they be cut off by the oath of possessing the three bodies. Through three dances in [sleep], you attained supreme accomplishment. You gained magical powers and subdued a powerful demonic dragon, which resided in the heart of the cowherd. It took on the form of radiant marks and signs, gradually obscuring the teachings of the compassionate teacher with various illusions disguised as Dharma. With your great power of samadhi, you suppressed the teachings and teacher called Star King, like a great wind bending Indra's bow, in the peaceful realm of Dharma. In the sacred land of India and the snowy land of Tibet, when the mirror of the minds of the Dharma holders was clouded, although many things contrary to the teachings appeared, no one else was able to completely refute them. Therefore, for the unparalleled kindness of creating unprecedented [new] teachings, clearing the defilements of the already translated [old] teachings, and destroying the demonic forces [of the Naga King and those who preach union as Dharma], I pay homage to Rinchen Zangpo (Precious Good). Having heard of your wisdom, compassion, and power, my mind is deeply drawn to you. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
