Regarding the pramana ( प्रमाण, pramāṇa,valid cognition) of appearance: For those who speak of the world and objects, it is the commonly accepted pramana. But for the Madhyamikas (中观宗), it is not a non-common pramana, because their non-common pramana does not exist for other opponents. When explained in this way, the pramana that is common with others is also a pramana that relies on the conventional, such as the three characteristics ( हेतु, hetu, reason), examples, and bases, and universal relations, etc., so in that case, the pramana is valid. But it is not the self-system's pramana, because it does not measure the ultimate truth ( परमार्थसत्य, paramārtha-satya). Nevertheless, Master Śāntarakṣita (寂护) wants the Svātantrika (自续派) to be valid. If the three characteristics are not established by the self-system's pramana, then the Svātantrika will not be valid, which Chandrakirti (月称) considers to be one of the differences between the Prāsaṅgika (应成派) and the Svātantrika. The reason for having to accept the ultimate truth: Second, regarding the way of accepting the ultimate truth, including identifying the basis, and the reason for accepting the ultimate truth when naming it. First, in this case, the object to be negated (法) is the negation of truly established. Its distinction also lies in the knowledge that relies on reasoning such as the separation of one and many. Although for this, there may be distinctions of characteristics that are different from others, such distinctions are not indispensable components, because the direct opposite of the grasping of innate clinging to truth, merely the distinction itself, is what is primary here. This is also the ultimate truth that is common with the Hīnayāna (小乘), because just this is directly seen by the Śrāvakas (声闻) in the path of seeing (见道), thereby directly realizing the selflessness of phenomena ( धर्मनैरात्म्य,dharma-nairātmya). Because they cling to the non-existence of truth, and are accompanied by conceptual clinging, and do not directly realize the non-proliferation ( निष्रपञ्च,niṣprapañca), they are unable to abandon the afflictive obscurations ( क्लेश-आवरण,kleśa-āvaraṇa) and the cognitive obscurations ( ज्ञेय-आवरण) to be abandoned on the path of seeing and the path of cultivation. Second, it is generally called truth, because it is not deceptive. It is also called nature, because the Buddhas see the true emptiness of the vase as the nature of the vase. Therefore, it is also called essence. It is also called the ultimate truth, because the definition of the ultimate truth is the samāhita-jñāna ( 等持智慧) of the Mahāyāna (大乘) noble ones, and the subsequent prṣṭhalabdha-jñāna ( 后得智) and anumāna ( अनुमान, inference) that are in accordance with it, although the former is not true in name, the latter is true in name. Just like this, the word truth means non-deception, and its basis is only two: the conventional truth ( संवृति-सत्य) and the ultimate truth. The former is true from the perspective of clinging to truth, but... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Secondly, it is true in the face of rational knowledge. The first refers to being established as true in its own right, while the second refers to being regarded as true by subsequent knowledge, even though it is not established as true in its own right. That is, applying the term 'true' to what is already established as true is the way of the world, while applying the term 'true' to what is not true is the way of the noble ones. So, which of these two truths do you accept? When the reasoning of Madhyamaka (中观,the Middle Way school of Buddhism) does not analyze at all, it is regarded as true according to the first way. But when it analyzes, the latter becomes dominant, because it is said that the nature of conventional truth is negated, and the nature of ultimate truth, endowed with three special characteristics, is accepted as its own nature. The former is the nature of conventional truth, which deceives the mind that has its own object of calm abiding, because it cannot withstand the analysis of Madhyamaka. Then, will the untrue also deceive? Because it also cannot withstand the analysis of later reasoning. Although it is untrue and deceptive when reasoning analyzes it, it is not deceptive and true as long as it does not analyze it. For example, the conventional truth of the world is regarded as true as long as the reasoning of Madhyamaka does not analyze it. So, if the untrue, by its very nature, is truly established because it is true, what is the answer? There are two answers to this: one is the answer that is common with other schools, and the other is the answer that is unique to one's own school. The first is that it is necessary to distinguish between the way in which the innate truth of the world is established and the way in which the truth of Madhyamaka is established. How is this distinguished? In the world, there is no difference between truth and being established as true, and all that is false is considered conventional, and all that is true is considered ultimate. All that is the truth of ultimate reality is considered to be truly established. From the world to the Yogacara (瑜伽行派,Yogic Practice school of Buddhism), all schools agree on this. The Madhyamaka school, on the other hand, considers that which can withstand rational analysis to be truly established, and that which cannot withstand rational analysis to be untrue. In that case, if it is established as true, then it is necessarily true, but the converse is not necessarily true, because it does not necessarily withstand rational analysis. So, is it not true either? Because it cannot withstand rational analysis. To this, we admit that it is not true in the face of rational analysis, and we have already negated the conventional truth. As long as we do not analyze the untruth that has been negated, we accept it as true. So, is that also considered truly established? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
